Eagles receiver Britain Covey and wife welcome first child after Super Bowl loss
Congratulations are in order for Eagles receiver Britain Covey and his wife, Leah. The couple — who went viral during Super Bowl 2023 — welcomed their first child together, a baby boy named Nelson Jude Covey. They announced the news Sunday on Instagram, where they posted photos of their newborn son. “One week old today and we are in love!” Leah wrote. The couple, who announced they were expecting in September, was all smiles posing as a family of three. Leah also shared the post on her Instagram Story and wrote: “My whole world in one picture.” In a separate post...
First Republic shares drop 18% as fears grow of more banks failing
Shares of First Republic Bank were down nearly 20% in pre-market trading on Monday after credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s warned that a $30 billion rescue plan inked for the troubled bank last week may not be enough. The San Francisco-based regional bank, saw its stock price sag after Standard & Poor’s slashed its credit rating from BB+ to B+ on Sunday, saying “substantial” concerns remain about the bank’s financial health. A BB+ credit rating is considered below investment grade, which means that the financial institution in question is particularly vulnerable to economic headwinds and thus is at higher risk...
The crucial business still facing the Giants and Jets — from superstar money to roster holes
The sequel to “The Tortoise and the Hare” could be the story of the MLB and NFL free-agency cycles. While baseball’s sweepstakes always start slow and finish strong, football free agency is all about the first-week frenzy, which is now complete. To finish the analogy, just like the original folktale, slow and steady wins the race because MLB contracts are fully guaranteed and NFL contracts are not. A couple of big names remain available for NFL teams with salary-cap space to burn entering Monday, but most teams are ready to shift offseason focus to next month’s draft … unless a trade for...
Fifth 9/11 plane investigated as terrorist target: ‘There’s a good chance’
The captain of a United Airlines flight scheduled to take off the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, is convinced his plane was intended to be part of the coordinated terrorist attack. “There is a good chance that somebody was plotting to try to use our airplane as a weapon of mass destruction,” pilot Tom Mannello says in “TMZ Investigates: 9/11: The Fifth Plane,” premiering Monday at 9 p.m. ET on Fox. TMZ said it spent six months investigating the “suspicious and alarming activities” aboard Flight 23, a Boeing 767 that was due to leave JFK Airport for LA at 9 a.m. Among the claims: Mannello said he...
China’s leader Xi in Moscow for meeting with Putin
MOSCOW — Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow on Monday on a three-day visit that offers a strong political boost for Russian President Vladimir Putin as fighting in Ukraine grinds on. China and Russia have described Xi’s trip as part of efforts to further deepen their “no-limits friendship.” The Kremlin has welcomed China’s peace plan for Ukraine and said it would be discussed talks between Putin and Xi that will begin over dinner on Monday. Beijing has called for a cease-fire, but Washington strongly rejected the idea as the effective ratification of the Kremlin’s battlefield gains. Xi’s trip to Russia comes after the International Criminal Court on Friday issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest on war crimes charges. The Kremlin, which doesn’t recognize the authority of the ICC, has rejected its move as “legally null and void.” China’s foreign ministry on Monday called on the ICC to “respect the jurisdictional immunity” of a head of state and “avoid politicization and double standards.” China looks to Russia as a source of oil and gas for its energy-hungry economy and as a partner in opposing what both see as American domination of global affairs.
Rupert Murdoch engaged to Ann Lesley Smith
Rupert Murdoch. Professionally, the parent of Earth’s media. Personally, the creator of new news himself. Celebrating March, his Nativity month, a new scoop is Mr. Murdoch’s getting married — again. But first, before anything, we discuss the important stuff. Like his bride-to-be’s Asscher-cut diamond solitaire which the almost groom personally selected. He says: “I’m one-fourth Irish.” He presented the ring to her on St. Pat’s Day in our very own NYC. He says: “I was very nervous. I dreaded falling in love — but I knew this would be my last. It better be. I’m happy.” Former San Fran police chaplain Ann Lesley...
What’s really going on with Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and the new ‘Monday Night Football’ shot-callers
After the first year of its new booth of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, ESPN changed the producer and director for “Monday Night Football.” The news: Producer Phil Dean and director Jimmy Platt are out, and producer Steve Ackles and director Derek Mobley are in. Platt will be the director for the college football national championship game, and Dean will move to the No. 2 college football team. As demotions go, those are pretty good landing spots. We spoke about it on last week’s pod, which received some attention, and Awful Announcing’s Sean Keeley published a piece including my comments and quoting...
Adam Sandler presented Mark Twain Prize for comedy in front of star-studded friends
A big honor for “Big Daddy.” Comedy megastar Adam Sandler was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor during a star-filled ceremony at Washington’s Kennedy Center Sunday night. A lengthy list of some of his Hollywood co-stars and fellow comedy icons were in attendance, including Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Chris Rock, Conan O’Brien, Judd Apatow, Ben Stiller, Steve Buscemi, Luis Guzmán, Dana Carvey, Rob Schneider, and David Spade. Sandler, 56, thanked his family and friends for helping and supporting him over his multi-decade career that started with open mics and formed into million-dollar blockbuster movies. “As I look at this goofy award, I...
Biden’s Twitter account fact-checked for dubious claim about the taxes billionaires pay
President Joe Biden’s Twitter account posted a questionable statistic on Saturday about how much tax American billionaires pay. “Look, I think you should be able to be a billionaire if you can earn it, but just pay your fair share,” Biden’s tweet read. “I think you ought to pay a minimum tax of 25%. It’s about basic fairness.” The tweet included a graphic of a Biden quote that said: “You know the average tax billionaires pay? Three percent. No billionaire should be paying a lower tax than somebody working as a schoolteacher or a firefighter.” But it is unclear where the 3% figure came from, and...
Bettors react in disbelief to March Madness bad beat at buzzer in TCU-Gonzaga
It ain’t over ’til it’s over. Even when the game has been decided. Damion Baugh’s 3-pointer at the buzzer for TCU on Sunday night didn’t beat Gonzaga but it did cost plenty of bettors by making the final score 84-81. Of vital importance to the gambling world, Gonzaga were 4.5 point favorites. At Circa Sports in Las Vegas, fans reacted as if the shot had won or lost the game — as it did mean winning or losing for their wallets. Some gamblers could be seen with their arms raised in triumph, while others put their hands on their heads in disbelief. Hunter...
Potential tequila shortage could impact your next margarita due to Mexico’s extreme dryness
Is tequila on the rocks? The next time you order a margarita, you might be holding back more than the salted rim. Extreme weather during the past few years in Mexico and other areas of the world has hurt crop production of the base and main ingredient in tequila, according to Everstream Analytics’ chief meteorologist Jon Davis. “At a time when large agave crops are needed to meet demand, the extreme weather in Mexico is increasing the problems and the potential for scarcity of the product,” Davis said. The succulent crop can withstand a great deal of stress from drought. However, when conditions are this extreme, even...
Dear Abby: I don’t want to get stuck raising my nephew
DEAR ABBY: I have been with my husband for 10 years. Last year, his brother’s baby mama died, and we are stuck raising his brother’s 11-year-old son. I told my husband I don’t want to do this, but he refuses to listen. My youngest child is 28 years old. I think he is choosing this over our marriage. Advice? — POST-PARENT IN SOUTH CAROLINA DEAR POST-PARENT: This should not have been a unilateral decision. Why isn’t the boy’s father prepared to raise his son? Are there other relatives, such as your in-laws, who could step in? If your husband is dead...
Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu hitting .400 as strong spring continues
Here are some nuggets from Yankees’ spring training on Sunday: DJ keeps rolling DJ Lemahieu’s strong spring continued with a pair of singles in the 5-3 loss to the Orioles at Steinbrenner Field. The infielder is 10-for-25 (.400) in nine Grapefruit League games. Evade route Utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera, playing left field, misplayed a fifth-inning fly ball from Kyle Stowers into an RBI double. Cabrera took a poor route, and the ball sailed just over his glove and to the wall. Caught my eye Center fielder Aaron Hicks stole a hit from Stowers in the fourth inning, when Hicks sprinted in and to his right to make a diving catch. Two batters later, Hicks ranged back and made an over-his-shoulder, running catch to retire Josh Lester. Without Harrison Bader, Hicks will be an option in center field. Monday’s schedule The Yankees will be off. They next play Tuesday, against the Tigers, at 1:05 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field.
Lou Carnesecca gives his endorsement for St. John’s to hire Rick Pitino
ALBANY — Rick Pitino has Lou Carnesecca’s endorsement to become the next St. John’s coach. As St. John’s tries to hire the Hall of Fame coach, the 98-year-old Carnesecca told Fox 5 that the school should make the move to bring in Pitino. “For what is worth to me right now, I think Rick Pitino [should be hired], I really believe that,” Carnesecca said. “As the coach, the basketball coach, I don’t think we [can] get a better coach. I mean, I don’t know any better at this time. You look around, who [are] you gonna get, right? I can’t bring back...
K’Andre Miller was everywhere during Rangers’ first-period explosion
The Rangers exploded for six goals in the first period. Defenseman K’Andre Miller had a hand in four of them. Finishing Sunday night’s 7-0 win over the Predators with two goals and two assists, Miller became the first defenseman in Rangers history to record four points in a single period. He also joined Adam Fox, Tony DeAngelo and Tom Poti as the fourth Rangers blueliner this century to record four points in a game. The 23-year-old defenseman scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season to establish a new career-high in the blowout victory. In addition to giving the Rangers a 4-0...
Rancher rips Utah teacher’s climate assignment encouraging kids to eat bugs over beef: ‘Junk science’
A teacher from Utah’s Nebo School district went viral for doling out an extra credit assignment encouraging students to eat insects for a lesson on climate change and claiming that doing so would alleviate some of the harm done by raising cattle and eating beef, according to information obtained by Fox News Digital. “Should we be eating bugs?” teacher Kim Cutler asked in a video that aired Sunday on “Fox & Friends Weekend.” “Yeah, because we’re killing the world by raising cows and animals,” she continued. Will Harris, a fourth-generation Georgia cattleman, pushed back against the notion. “It’s an example of a fanatic attempting...
Elderly dog saved after falling 23 feet down utility hole while looking for treats
When searching for treats goes wrong. Firefighters saved a senior pooch after she fell 23 feet down an open utility hole in Portland, Oregon, on Friday. Tess, a 14-year-old Labrador retriever, plummeted down the exposed manhole cover while city workers were inspecting a storm drain. “She just walked up expecting a treat and just went over the edge and disappeared,” Larry Beutler, Tess’s owner, told KGW 8. Beutler said it was “quite a shock” to see his pup vanish down the hole and he quickly called his wife to break the horrifying news. “It was absurd,” Linda Beutler, Tess’s dog mom, said after discovering her canine may...
Fairleigh Dickinson’s loss in March Madness a ‘bittersweet moment’ for two seniors
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The most painful part about the finality of the NCAA Tournament for all but the team crowned national champion is for the teams eliminated with seniors having played their final collegiate games. For Fairleigh Dickinson, after its 78-70 loss to FAU Sunday night in the second round at Nationwide Arena, the loss marked the end for the collective heart and soul of its program, guards Demetre Roberts and Grant Singleton. The two have played five years together and been roommates all that time, dating back to Division II St. Thomas Aquinas, where they played for coach Tobin Anderson and...
Neither David Peterson nor Tylor Megill grabs control of race for rotation spot
PORT ST. LUCIE — David Peterson and Tylor Megill weren’t exactly strike-throwers Sunday. The two pitchers competing for the Mets’ rotation vacancy combined for nine walks over 7 ²/₃ innings, but Peterson at least minimized damage, whereas Megill’s afternoon snowballed, with porous defense behind him a culprit. “They are both fine,” manager Buck Showalter said after the Mets’ 8-7 exhibition loss to the Cardinals at Clover Park. “They are physically in a good place, they got their pitch count up and I am OK with where both those guys are.” Ultimately, both could get a shot in the rotation to start the season....
Several former Nets not surprised by breakup of Brooklyn superteam
Three former Nets teammates were all back in town together with Denver, and none was surprised at how their supposed superteam broke up and the Kevin Durant-Kyrie Irving era ended in Brooklyn. As a matter of fact, a couple expected it. “No, [I’m not surprised]. Not really, no,” Bruce Brown told The Post. “No, I think everyone was not. Everyone’s not surprised with what happened, because they both … KD requested a trade, and there was a lot going on in the summer. So I think it was good for both parties to move on.” Brown said that there was plenty going on...
