Johnson County café closes ‘with a heavy heart' after a year in business

After a year and a few months in business, a Johnson County international café has closed. Taiwanese-based chain 85°C Bakery Cafe , which has locations across the world, closed its Overland Park location on Halloween. The former bakery and coffee shop had signs on its door Monday morning that alerted fans to its exit. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bakery …” the notice read in part. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for your loyalty, trust, and support over the years.” The lights were off and product had been moved out of the store. In June 2025, the location opened at 12061 Metcalf Ave., serving individually packaged pastries: jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes, pineapple cake and more. The opening day was received with long lines and excitement from fans who had been to 85°C’s locations in Hawaii, Texas and beyond. Around that same time, international chain Paris Baguette opened its first area location at 11137 W. 95th St. near Oak Park Mall. That chain, based in South Korea, now also has locations at 15895 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 1360

Arby’s has shut down two of its restaurants in Johnson County, leaving a suburb with just one location remaining. Two Arby’s restaurants in Olathe have closed: 13790 S. Black Bob Road and 18615 W. 151st St. Signs direct customers to the remaining Olathe spot: 18060 W. 119th St. Arby’s has yanked the addresses of both closed locations from its website. The Star contacted Arby’s parent company, Inspire Brands, for comment. The company did not respond Wednesday. Flynn Group, a popular franchisee with dozens of Kansas locations, also did not respond. There does not appear to be any other affected locations. Managers at several different Johnson County locations said they had not been alerted of a closure. About 14 Arby’s locations remain in the metro. Spots in Johnson County include: 15021 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 9525 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and 11445 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee. Arby’s has been serving roast-beef sandwiches, curly fries and shakes since its inception in 1964.

More than 40 kinds of poinsettias fill one holiday shop, and some of them aren’t red or white at all. That alone made me look twice. The same place has been spraying fake snow onto real trees since 1964. Every winter, the greenhouses glow with twinkle lights from floor...

Paul Rudd, Overland Park get a shout-out when CNN announces Adam Hamilton victory

Welp, we did not have “Paul Rudd” on our election night bingo card. But the “Ant-Man” actor scored a surprise shout-out as Jake Tapper on CNN announced that Adam Hamilton defeated Kansas Senator Roger Marshall in a shocking win Tuesday. Tapper threw the live coverage to Hamilton headquarters in Overland Park, “the home of Paul Rudd,” he said. Rudd, born in New Jersey, spent much of his childhood in Johnson County then studied theater at the University of Kansas. And Tapper would know that because the CNN anchor is a regular celebrity guest at Big Slick, the annual Children’s Mercy fundraiser that Rudd co-hosts. In October, Rudd co-hosted a get-out-the-vote event in New York with “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The event raised money for Latino Victory Project and Onward Together , nonprofit groups that work on voter mobilization and getting people involved in the political process. Jimmy Fallon, Adam Scott and Rita Wilson were among the celebrities who participated.

Johnson County voters led a ‘blue wave' in Kansas, further shifting to the left

Just 10 years ago, Donald Trump headlined a Republican sweep of the federal offices on the ballot in Johnson County. Since then, the suburban Kansas City county’s electorate has continued a yearslong trend of turning the previously purple county solidly blue. As a nationwide “blue wave” led to a hugely successful midterm election for Democratic candidates, Johnson County’s voters spearheaded the shift to the left in Kansas. Along with historically Democratic Wyandotte County, the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro has cemented itself as the political party’s stronghold in Kansas. An easy answer for the ongoing shift would be Republican President Donald Trump’s unpopularity, high gas prices and a war with Iran. But Deann Mitchell, chair for the Johnson County Democratic Party, said years of strategizing campaigns and recruiting pragmatic leaders to represent the party led to the historic election night. “It’s been 10 years of continuous work to turn Johnson County blue,” Mitchell said. At the forefront of the county’s Democratic push was wide support for Leawood pastor Adam Hamilton, who received more votes in the county than any candidate — even more than five-time elected Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids. Hamilton defeated incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Roger

We asked Kansas voters at the polls about Hamilton & Sen. Marshall. Here's what they said

After months of debates, rallies, heated campaigning and a late national spotlight, voters in Wyandotte and Johnson counties turned out in earnest Tuesday to weigh in on Kansas’ U.S. Senate seat. The race between incumbent Republican Sen. Roger Marshall and Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton has been hotly contested in recent months and even drew visits from President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who aimed to boost Marshall as polls showed Hamilton gaining ground. Polling has shown a tight race, which in itself was remarkable for a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932. The Star spoke with 16 voters in the two counties throughout Tuesday morning and afternoon, six in Wyandotte County and 10 in Johnson County. The decidedly unscientific results: Seven said they voted for Marshall, four said they voted for Hamilton, four declined to say whom they voted for and one said he voted for a write-in candidate. Here’s how voters at polling sites throughout the two counties were thinking about the race on Election Day. Views from the polls on Election Day Marshall supporters Amy and Thomas Drinnon, of Kansas City, Kansas, said they were anti-abortion and said the issue was

Johnson County electing 11 new Democrat lawmakers ends a Republican supermajority

Johnson County voters could send nearly a dozen new Democratic lawmakers to the Kansas House, helping reshape the Legislature and break up a Republican supermajority. Kansas Democrats needed to gain five seats in the House to end the Republican stranglehold on the chamber. They gained those seats and much more in Johnson County. The tidal wave of votes for Democratic candidates in the suburban Kansas City county drove a historic night for the political party, which saw its first candidate elected to the U.S. Senate in nearly a century. The county’s voters flipped 11 of the 20 state legislative seats expected to switch from Republican to Democratic control once vote totals are finalized. Democrats are now expected to hold 25 of the county’s 27 seats in the Kansas House. Several of those races came down to the wire and may not be fully decided until all mail ballots are counted this week. But the outcome shows that Johnson County’s voters practically single-handedly ended the Republican supermajority. The walloping of Republican candidates reflected a motivated electorate. Johnson County saw its second-highest turnout for a midterm election in history, with 62% of registered voters casting ballots. The only midterm with a higher
