Eugene teacher Ashley Reich wins year of mortgage payments
With everything getting more expensive, wouldn't it be nice to have your mortgage covered for a year? One Eugene elementary school teacher's commitment to keeping school fun has given her just that. Ashley Reich, a fourth-grade teacher at Bertha Holt Elementary School in Eugene School District 4J , was named K-5 Educator of the Year by OnPoint Community Credit Union . OnPoint will reward Reich's dedication to education by paying her mortgage for the next year. She also will receive an additional $2,500 that she can use in her classroom. "It's really just a life-changing amount of money, honestly," Reich said. "It'll just make life a little bit easier this next year." Reich has been a teacher for over 20 years, about 15 of which have been at Holt. In her time at the school, she has been a driver of change and new ideas. Shortly after joining Holt, Reich formed a student council that is still going strong with fourth and fifth-grade representatives organizing community fundraisers, school assemblies and other events. Reich is also well known around school for her YouTube videos. Every year, she and her students make a music video, covering a pop song to get students

I was inspired by the nuanced approach to Eugene’s housing woes taken by Eugene City Council Ward 3 candidate Jennifer Smith during the recent Eugene City Club meeting. She acknowledged that we need more housing options and more building resilience but cautioned against inappropriate development and the extractive nature of our city’s current market-rate housing projects.

Mike Clark’s search for pragmatic solutions has earned my support | Letter to the editor
As a resident of Ward 5, I’m proud to support Mike Clark for reelection to the Eugene City Council. Ward 5 represents a pragmatic and growing part of Eugene — one that has embraced change rather than resisted it. In areas like North Gilham and North Delta Highway, we’ve welcomed thousands of new neighbors and taken a “yes in my backyard” approach to housing. Mike has not only supported that vision, he’s helped lead it. His commitment to increasing housing supply and promoting a diversity of housing types has created more opportunity and improved affordability for residents.
