This Oregon Bakery Serves Food Worth Traveling For Even If You’re Not in Portland
This place doesn’t scream “must stop,” but I’ve learned the hard way that skipping it is a mistake. That unassuming turnoff leads straight to Creswell Bakery, and once you’ve been, every road trip through the Willamette Valley suddenly includes a planned exit. The highway billboards...

Former R-G writer Bob Keefer's Oregon desert photos on display in Eugene
Former Register-Guard arts writer Bob Keefer has a new photography exhibition on display through the end of April at Eugene’s Inn at the 5th hotel. Titled "The Oregon Desert," the show opened Monday, Feb. 2, in the hotel’s Maple Room and features hand-colored black-and-white photographs of eastern Oregon’s high desert. Keefer, who also worked as arts editor Eugene Weekly, said in a news release, “The eastern Oregon desert is one of the most quietly beautiful places I know,” Keefer said. “I love the isolation, the distant horizons, the wildlife, the sound of coyotes and the deep sense of community among the few people who live there.” Keefer has worked in hand-colored photography for more than 20 years, shooting pictures in black and white, making prints, and then using a brush to color them with oil paint or acrylics. The unusual medium harks back to the earliest days of photography, nearly 200 years ago, when artists began coloring monochrome daguerreotypes. In the 19th century, hand coloring was a common practice among many of the photographers who documented the American West. By the early 20th century, production of hand-colored postcard photos had become a large industry. “I like depicting the desert in

Couple brings an unstuffy vibe as they revive Springfield wine bar
Maddie and David Hersch were perched at Iris Wine Bar when they heard the news: Their favorite Springfield hangout would close by the end of 2025. As Iris Wine Club members and budding oenophiles, the Springfield couple didn’t want to lose what they considered a “third place,” especially one where drinking and learning about wine felt fun, relaxed and unstuffy.

This Oregon’s Classic Burger Joint Is Famous for Its Epic Hand-Spun Shakes
I walked into Giant Burger and immediately felt like I’d stepped back in time. This isn’t some trendy gastropub trying to recreate the past. It’s the real deal, a 60-year-old institution that’s been slinging massive burgers and impossibly thick milkshakes since 1947. What makes this place...

Contemporary composer wraps early silent films in a fresh soundtrack
Georges Méliès is one of the most important filmmakers that, outside of an academic film context, most Americans have never heard of. Méliès, a turn-of-the-century magician and toymaker, was a pioneer who used time-lapse photography, hand-painted frames, and other tricks to create early special effects. His work also includes some of the first science fiction and fantasy stories on film — like his famous 1909 “A Trip to the Moon,” with fantastical set design and prop work building magical worlds.

Hiking the South Willamette Trail
In the winter months, it’s often best to look for hikes at lower elevations and close to home unless you’re set up to deal with real adventures with possible snow, downed trees or road washouts. This year, so far, it’s easier to get to higher elevations (thanks climate chaos!), but it’s still nice to find a good hike close by. One of my go-tos is the South Willamette Trail, just 30 minutes from downtown Eugene.

A fan favorite pizza spot is rethinking its interiors, with new seating arrangements and thoughtful additions making the space more accessible and pleasant for customers. Also, a Eugene foodie staple is closing its doors at the end of February. Brian Pruett of Nosh Shop is stepping back from the business after close to seven years at the helm. Osteria DOP refreshes its interiors Rocky Maselli opened his fast casual pizza restaurant, Osteria DOP , in 2023. After three years of business, he's ready to upgrade its space. "Working with the space, the original design had a lot of counter seating," Maselli said. "Which is typical of a restaurant like this in Europe, but I think is kind of hard in a town like Eugene. One of our biggest complaints is the seating arrangements." The changes won't be anything dramatic, but they will make a big difference for customers. Maselli is teaming up with Rory Everitt of Rory Everitt Design to turn former counter seating into booths, add counter seating by
