This historic Kings Mountain mill could soon become apartments

A historic Kings Mountain mill that was originally opened in the late 1800s by one of the town's founders could soon be transformed into luxury apartments. The Kings Mountain City Council voted 6-1 to rezone the historic Phenix Mill property from light industrial to semi-urban residential. The change allows a developer to turn the building into apartments. Councilman Tyler Fletcher was the sole dissenting vote. Originally known as the Dilling Cotton Mill, it was built by Freno Dilling around 1892. The property is located on Phenix Street with U.S. 74 to the north and bordered by Norfolk Southern railroad tracks along the northwest. Brad Lagano, city planning director, said the property is just under 10 acres and the semi-urban residential designation fits with the surrounding area. Many of the homes near the building are former mill village houses. According to Cleveland County property records, the land is valued at $124,000. Lagano said the Dilling Mill operated for 50 years until it was purchased by Burlington Industries and renamed Phenix Mill in 1940. He said it was in operation until 1982 and has been sitting vacant for the past 40 years. A rusted chain-link fence with a no trespassing sign surrounds

Mecklenburg, Discovery Place reach ‘tentative' nature museum deal, manager says

Mecklenburg County has reached a tentative agreement with Discovery Place to settle a dispute over a revamped south Charlotte nature museum. But some county commissioners still have reservations. County Manager Mike Bryant told commissioners at their Thursday meeting the nonprofit museum group is now able to pay back almost $14 million owed to the county within five years. The debt stems from about $14.6 million the county agreed to lend Discovery Place in early 2024 to help cover the construction of a revamped nature museum in Freedom Park . The county owns the property and facility on Sterling Road near the Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods. Discovery Place has long operated the museum. The money was due to the county in late October, but Bryant informed commissioners at an Oct. 6 meeting that Discovery Place couldn’t make the payment. Commissioners expressed dismay with the situation, threatening to take control of the museum’s operations and hold Discovery Place in default for the money. Board chair Mark Jerrell formed an ad hoc committee to figure out what the county was willing to agree to, and that group asked county staff to explore an independent financial review of Discovery Place’s operations, assets and

'Forgotten Patriots' discussed at lecture series

While history books recount The Battle of Bunker Hill, Valley Forge, The Battle of Trenton and Yorktown, the efforts of Revolutionary War Patriots who served from the southern states and the contributions of patriots from areas like northeastern North Carolina are often neglected. Bill and Chris Barber sought to rectify that with their new book, “Forgotten Patriots of the Albemarle,” and a lecture on Oct. 9 at the historic 1767 Chowan County Courthouse. The lecture was part of the Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library’s Armchair Travelers Series in conjunction with Edenton State Historic Sites. Chris Barber, a retired educator, and Bill Barber, a retired professional forester, have created second careers with their research in local topics like the region’s massive timber industry of the early twentieth century, moonshine in the Albemarle region and now a long-overdue examination of the role northeastern counties of North Carolina played in the Revolution. Chris Barber said that historians understandably tell the stories of the biggest battles and of troops from the most populous colonies, but she said the story is bigger than that. “History lives in ordinary places,” she said. The Barbers’ research and subsequent book identified more than 700 patriots associated with the Edenton Military
