Walleye record-setting winning streak built through depth, quiet confidence
The Toledo Walleye have authored the longest winning streak in ECHL history with an all-around team effort — and by not talking about it. The Walleye extended their historic run of consistent success with their 19th win in a row in Game 1 of the Central Division finals on Friday night. That broke a record set in 2007 by the Las Vegas Wranglers for the longest winning streak -— including playoffs — in ECHL history. “We haven't talked about that streak once in the locker room,” Walleye coach Pat Mikesch said. “It's all about getting ready for the next game.” Toledo won the final 14 games of the regular season and then swept Kalamazoo in the opening round of the Kelly Cup playoffs. The Walleye then won their opening game against the Wheeling Nailers 2-1 in overtime at the Huntington Center.

Veteran Clay baseball team finding right chemistry for success
Building off of the league successes and tournament near-misses of recent seasons, an experienced and senior-dominated Clay baseball team has found the right diamond chemistry to emerge as northwest Ohio's top Division I team with tournament play starting next week. The Eagles — who are 15-1 overall and have already clinched an outright championship in the Northern Lakes League's Cardinal Division at 11-0 in league play — were ranked No. 11 in Ohio's latest D-I state coaches poll. Clay received the No. 1 seed for northwest Ohio district play and will open the tourney with a sectional final at home on May 15 against the winner of a May 13 sectional semifinal between Bowsher and Norwalk. “This group, the last couple years, has gotten a lot of varsity experience in a lot of big-game situations,” Clay head coach Jim Phillips said of the Eagles' senior leadership. “Playing for league and district championships, they have kind of embraced the moment.”

Mud Hens quiet Clippers for third straight win
COLUMBUS — The Toledo Mud Hens held the Columbus Clippers to just one run on four hits, picking up a 3-1 win Saturday for their third consecutive victory at Huntington Park. After losing in controversial fashion on Tuesday and giving up 14 runs on Wednesday, the Hens (19-13) have turned around to clinch at least a share of this week’s six-game series heading into Sunday’s finale. Kyle Manzardo got Columbus (12-19) on the board first, homering in the bottom of the fourth for a 1-0 lead. That was the only blemish against Toledo starting pitcher Bryan Sammons, who struck out seven with no walks and just two hits over six innings. For the second straight day, a three-run top of the fifth inning keyed the Hens to victory. Andrew Navigato led off the inning with a solo home run, Akil Baddoo doubled and scored on a Keston Hiura single, and Jace Jung came home on a Bligh Madris groundout.
University of Toledo men's tennis falls to Illinois 4-1 in NCAA first round
LEXINGTON, Ky. — For the second straight season, the University of Toledo men’s tennis team saw its season end at the hands of a Big Ten opponent in the first round of the NCAA tournament, falling 4-1 against Illinois on Friday. Last season, after winning its first Mid-American Conference title since 1973, Toledo was beaten by Michigan in Ann Arbor in the tournament’s first round. Mathis Debru and Kenta Miyoshi defeated Toledo’s Adam Kovac and Charlie Snow 6-1 in one match, then Illinois’ Lucas Horve and Oliver Okonkwo bested the Rockets’ Hanamichi Carvajal and Poonthong Komolpisut by a 6-2 final, clinching the point. Clay softball coach Radabaugh collects career win No. 600
With her team's 8-3 nonleague win over visiting Defiance on Saturday, Clay's Brenda Radabaugh earned her 600th career victory, becoming the eighth Ohio high school softball coach to reach that milestone. Radabaugh, 60, who is in her 32nd season as a head coach, has posted an overall 600-230 record, including 447-172 in 22-plus seasons at Clay (2001-24). Earlier, she was 153-58 overall in nine seasons at Central Catholic (1992-2000). “It means I'm getting old,” Radabaugh said when asked about reaching the milestone. “It means I've had great players and great coaches at my back the whole time. “I told them in the circle [after game], 'I didn't play any of the games — you guys did it all.' I've been very blessed with a lot of talented players and great assistant coaches. Kim Rector's been with me for all 24 years that I've been here.”
Clay to honor past baseball coaches
On Monday, at its baseball game against Southview, Clay will hold a dedication ceremony at Oregon Municipal Recreation Center's Ousky Field, naming its new press box/locker room facility after former longtime coaches Dick Kandik and Karl Knierim. After the school's original baseball coach, Harold Potter, posted a 472-277 record with 13 league titles between 1928-1974, Kandik, who had been Potter's assistant, served as head coach from 1975-1996, guiding the Eagles to a 438-164 record, nine Great Lakes League titles, and a 25-2 Class AAA state championship season in 1979. Knierim, a 1976 Clay grad who had played for Kandik before moving on to Kent State University, was Kandik's assistant for 11 years before succeeding him as head coach in 1997. In his 13 seasons (1997-2009), Knierim was 234-106-1 with five league titles (three in GLL, two in City League) and three district championships. “With how successful the program has been here over the last 95 years, it helps to have that stability with coaches,” current Clay coach Jim Phillips said. “We've only had five in all those years, so there's continuity.”
Central Catholic's Preston Fryzel is an in-demand tight end
It’s taken exactly one varsity season for Preston Fryzel to be rated among the best players in the state of Ohio for the class of 2026. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Central Catholic tight end received a three-star designation from 247Sports, which ranks Fryzel as the 31st-best player in Ohio and the No. 30 tight end in the country. “He’s one of those athletes that can do anything,” Central Catholic coach Greg Dempsey said. He’s not kidding. Fryzel projects as a college tight end, but he can play almost any position on the field, except offensive and defensive line.
