Special screenings part of Maumee theater's reopening anniversary
The 20th anniversary of Maumee Indoor Theater’s reopening will be marked with special film screenings through Thursday. The Big Sleep from 1946 with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the Notebook from 2004 with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams and this year’s Arthur the King, starring Mark Wahlberg, are featured. Admission will be $3 and patrons will receive a free soda with the purchase of any size popcorn. The theater, at 601 Conant St. and built in 1946, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. “The Art Deco movie house fell into ruin after closing in 1996 before the city stepped in to purchase and renovate the iconic structure,” according to a news release.
Monnette’s on Reynolds transforms into garden store
The very mention of Monnette’s in the Toledo area often brings to mind visions of fresh fruit, vegetables, deli offerings, and a large variety of flowers and plants for the garden. John Monnette, Sr., opened the first store on Tremainsville Road in 1951. In the years since, the family added locations on Secor Road in the Trilby neighborhood, on Glendale Avenue in South Toledo, and on Reynolds Road in West Toledo. The Reynolds Road location closed in June of 2020 after a car went through the front of the store. It briefly reopened in 2023, but closed in December after only three months. Marc Monnette, who owns both the Glendale Avenue and Secor Road locations, said he purchased the Reynolds Road store from his nephew because of the growth of the greenhouse business at the other two locations.

New museum celebrates steel guitar in gospel music
A different kind of music is wafting out of the Collingwood Presbyterian Church these days. The Sacred Steel Music & History Museum opened April 27 inside the Old West End church, marking a moment in local music preservation 80 years in the making, and a personal journey more than 10 years in the making for Del Ray Grace, who spearheaded the venture with his wife Kelli. “We have been planning for this about 10 years now,” Del Ray Grace said. “The administrator here at the church was trying to repurpose the place and this is the kind of programming they were looking to offer inside the space they have here.” “Sacred steel” music refers to the often scattered use of the steel guitar, known for its use in country music and Hawaiian music, in Black churches and the gospel music played in those churches.

Meals with Maddie: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Street Corn Salad
As an ode to Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Street Corn Salad is on the menu for this month’s Meals with Maddie, in partnership with Durocher’s, located at 5555 Monroe St., Sylvania. Think of elote: charred corn on the cob slathered with mayo, lime, spice, and Cotija cheese, but deconstructed. This dish has all the components that make elote so undeniably craveable, but in salad form — the corn is charred, then cut off the cob and tossed in a limey, mayo dressing with plenty of garlic. My rule of thumb is the greener the better — in life and in cooking — which explains the addition of scallions, cilantro, and jalapeno for that necessary touch of heat.
