Ohio auto parts maker to pay $3M in COVID fines
(The Center Square) – An Ohio auto parts manufacturer has agreed to pay more than $3 million in fines and restitution after admitting it lied to received loans and loan forgiveness under the federal government’s COVD-19 era Paycheck Protection Program. The company, Murotech Ohio Corp., makes auto parts primarily in St. Marys. It is a subsidiary of a Japanese company, Muro Corp., prosecutors said. Under the settlement, the company has admitted that it “knowingly provided false information to obtain Paycheck Protection Program loans and loan forgiveness,” prosecutors said. Murotech agreed to pay more than $1 million in restitution. “Murotech Ohio’s first application submitted in May 2020 certified that the company had fewer than 500 employees, but in fact, it exceeded that amount when counting affiliates,” prosecutors said. “A second application submitted in January of 2021 certified that it employed fewer than 300 employees, but in truth, the company employed far more when including affiliates. Murotech Ohio then applied to have both federal loans forgiven and certified on its submitted applications that the number of employees was below program limit requirements. “ Authorities learned about the scheme from whistleblowers, according to a news release. The whistleblowers will each receive $151,980.75 under

State plans to replace aging Toledo psychiatric hospital
COLUMBUS — The building that houses Northwest Ohio Behavioral Healthcare has reached the end of its useful life and requires a full replacement, according to the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health. The department discussed its plans to replace the state-owned and operated psychiatric hospital at 930 S. Detroit Ave. in a funding request that was approved by the Ohio Controlling Board on Monday. Northwest Ohio Behavioral Healthcare provides inpatient care for acutely mentally ill adults from northwest Ohio. The facility was renamed from Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital in 2024, while its overseeing agency, formerly the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, changed its name in 2025. The Ohio Controlling Board released approximately $2.9 million for the department to enter a contract with LevelHEADS Inc. The architectural firm was selected by both the department and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission to support all phases of the design and construction process. Vanessa McMahon, legislative liaison for the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health, said the building was originally designed as a geriatric facility in the 1970s. “The building is really old,” Ms. McMahon said. “There are places that just aren’t as safe as they could be for a psychiatric hospital.” She

Rising fuel, health care costs burden Ohioans, Acton hears in Fremont
FREMONT – Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton talked about the costs of fuel, health care and energy when she stopped at Outpour Coffee for a roundtable with local businesses as part of her “My Promise for Ohio” Tour Oct. 13. Acton also spoke with Sandusky County residents about their frustrations and needs from the state. “I was the first to call for a gas tax holiday. That was because I was listening to Ohioans everywhere I go," Acton said. "I was hearing stories, just like we heard today, of people who aren’t making trips for routine care, for things like exercising and for things like getting their health care, or going to a doctor’s appointment, because the cost of fueling up is so much." “We all know what it means for the cost of gas for our car, but I can tell you, if our cars run on gas, this economy runs on diesel. Our farmers are struggling with the price of diesel right now, and even small business owners are often being charged surcharges because of the fuel prices right now. So, this is a real calamity.” Acton also linked higher energy prices to data center growth and
