Underly Wants a Blank Check on Wisconsin School Funding

Less than 24 hours after Democrats won the governor’s office and both houses of the Legislature, State Superintendent Jill Underly was already reaching for the checkbook. Her Wednesday statement on Wisconsin school funding called the state formula “broken.” She said she was “optimistic about what the outcomes of yesterday’s election mean for the future of public education in Wisconsin,” and “hopeful we are in a position to make meaningful change.” You can read the full statement yourself. ANTIGO — Voters in Antigo and across Wisconsin headed to the polls Tuesday for the 2026 midterm elections, weighing in on races that will shape representation at the local, state and federal levels. In Langlade County, voters joined communities throughout the entire state in casting ballots on candidates and issues, while statewide results brought changes to Wisconsin’s political landscape. Langlade CountyLanglade County residents will see familiar faces when it comes to the positions of sheriff, clerk of courts and coroner with each race going uncontested. Tina Wild will continue her position as clerk of courts where racked up a total of 7,752 votes. Coroner Larry Shadick will continue in the position, having been with it for over 24 years. Shadick received 7,699 total. Newly elected Sheriff Dan Bauknecht tallied 7,709 votes. Bauknecht is taking over for current Sheriff Mark Westen, who has been in the position for over nine years. Record midterm spending puts campaign finance reform back in focus

Campaign finance experts say the midterms have exposed how little current laws do to regulate the flow of money into American elections, despite efforts to strengthen campaign finance rules. OpenSecrets, a nonprofit group tracking money in politics, projected nearly $12 billion in national spending on election campaigns, including almost $3.9 billion from groups operating outside individual candidate campaigns. In Wisconsin, outside groups, including super PACs, spent nearly $90 million on local races. Michael Kang, professor at Northwestern's Pritzker School of Law, said the unprecedented amount of money poured into the election cycle underscored what he described as the practical collapse of campaign finance regulations and the need for reform. "If you looked at what we've tried to accomplish through campaign finance regulation over the last half-century, we would want better disclosure of what's going on and where the money's coming from, even if you don't have a problem with the amounts of money spent," Kang explained. He said the election cycle demonstrated money does not always guarantee victory. Kang pointed to deep political sentiment, which outweighed even enormous campaign war chests. Conservative-aligned groups accounted for nearly 80% of reported outside spending in Wisconsin, yet Democrats won the historic governor's race
