Budbreak festival to uncork Saturday
At last report, Saturday’s weather forecast looked a little ominous — yet organizers of the annual Budbreak festival promise that more besides rain will be flowing in downtown Mount Airy regardless, namely wine and craft beer from area producers. “It’s been a great festival,” said President Michael Barnes of the Rotary Club of Mount Airy, sponsor of the event now in its 14th year. Petitioners seek to name visitors' center for Rees
A group of area residents have started a petition drive to have the new Mount Airy Visitors Center that is part of the grand plan for the area surrounding the Spencer’s Mill hotel project named after a local legend: Flip Rees. Pilot Mountain Elementary wins book battle
Representatives from every elementary school in Surry County recently gathered at Surry Community College take part in the Book Battle Competition. In this event, students showcased their academic abilities. Throughout the school year, in preparation for the event, participating students read the same 15 novels. Each school came to battle one another and compete for the title of champion. “The competition was intense with each school preparing their teams for the book battle,” organizers said. Questions were asked about characters, plot, setting, and a multitude of other details found in the books. After battling each school, all students convened in the college’s gym to await the results. The top three schools were recognized with Pilot Mountain being named first place for the second year in a row. Students could hardly contain their excitement as they claimed the trophy.
