Search operations continue on the Susquehanna River

PERRYVILLE — Search operations resumed Friday morning at 7 for a missing boater on the Susquehanna River, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police. Boaters reported a capsized boat Wednesday, said NRP spokesman Hunter Dortenzo. The operator of that boat, Mark Everett Coates III, 18, from Havre de Grace, Md. was missing. "Officers were dispatched Thursday morning for a report of a 10-foot aluminum jon boat found capsized near Garrett Island. Coates was last known to be operating the jon boat near the Hatem Memorial Bridge (US 40) yesterday, November 4, at approximately 5 p.m. after launching his vessel from the Water Street Boat Ramp in Havre de Grace," Dortenzo said. Multiple agencies are taking part in the search including dive and aviation services from Harford, Baltimore and New Castle counties. "Coates was last seen wearing a chartreuse long-sleeved t-shirt and blue jeans. Anyone who may have seen related boating activity or has information regarding known locations of the missing boater since his departure from Havre de Grace should contact the Maryland Natural Resources Police at 410-260-8888 ," Dortenzo said. "Boaters should avoid transiting the Susquehanna River between the US 40 and I-95 bridges while search operations are ongoing."

Police: Man, 81, stripped, tortured and robbed inside Elkton residence

ELKTON – An 81-year-old man suffered numerous injuries Wednesday inside an Elkton-area home during a protracted robbery in which one of the two suspects allegedly tied him to a chair, stripped him naked, poured hot syrup on his body, beat him, held a knife to his throat, threatened to kill him and stole his money, jewelry and other valuables, according to Cecil County District Court records. One of the suspects – Austin Michael Maniscalco, 27 – drew on the elderly man’s bare chest to show “where he would carve his heart out,” court records allege. Cecil County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Maniscalco at approximately 1 p.m. Wednesday at the conclusion of a five-hour-long barricade situation that ended when he exited a residence in the unit block of Chestnut Drive, north of Elkton, and surrendered, police said. Investigators arrested Maniscalco’s alleged accomplice –Taylor Storm Wheatley-Falcone, 31 – later that day when she returned to that Chestnut Drive residence where she and Maniscalco live together, police added. Investigators noted that Wheatley-Falcone “left the residence during the time frame when the assault was occurring.” The barricade situation started at approximately 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when law enforcement officers and other first responders rushed to

Chester County battles swarm of phorid flies

Phorid flies, small insects that often breed in moist areas, swarm homes and neighborhoods near Chester County mushroom farms each fall. This year, state officials are strengthening measures to control their spread. Eric Toedter is the founder and president of MYCOguard, a company that helps mushroom farms control pests. He said the flies feed on mushroom mycelium and can spread into nearby residential areas. They pose a challenge for farmers during the fall holiday season because fly populations peak when demand for mushrooms rises.

Perryville residents not happy with bamboo overgrowth

PERRYVILLE — Residents who live along Cecil and Maryland avenues are asking the town to help them tame a neighbor’s crop of bamboo. “The bamboo hangs over sheds, solar panels are in danger,” Veronica Kranz — who lives on Maryland Avenue — told Perryville’s mayor and commissioners. “We’re asking you to remove the bamboo from the alley and keep it clear.” While Maryland law allows counties and towns to enact its own legislation to control this plant, Mayor Michelle Linkey said she is only aware of one town that has such a law on its books and it’s not Perryville. “Maryland has 157 towns and only one has that ordinance,” Linkey told Kranz, adding she will be contacting that town. Montgomery County prohibits the sale, planting or transplanting of running bamboo. Frederick County went a step further, levying fines of up to $1,000 per day for selling or distributing “invasive bamboo.” Kranz said she and her neighbors have tried to work with the property owner to no avail. She pointed to town history and law in her search for assistance. “Since 1902, there’s been a public alley there,” Kranz said of the access road running in between the homes. “I’m

Police handling barricade situation near Elkton

ELKTON – Law enforcement officers are handling a barricade situation in an Elkton-area neighborhood after they responded to a dispatch regarding a purported assault victim who was naked and bloody in the street, according to the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office. CCSO deputies and other first responders rushed to Chestnut Drive, northeast of Elkton, at approximately 8:30 a.m. Wednesday after receiving that dispatch, police said. An ambulance crew drove the injured man to an area hospital for medical treatment, police added. Capt. Michael Holmes, a CCSO spokesman, said he could not confirm that the injured man was naked when deputies arrived at the scene. But he did confirm that the dispatch to first responders reported the unfolding situation as such. Deputies surrounded a residence on Chestnut Drive but, as of noon Wednesday, it was not clear if the suspect in this alleged assault is inside the dwelling, police reported. The barricade situation had reached its third hour shortly before noon. “We’re still trying to piece everything together right now. We are in a barricade situation and we blocked off the road for public safety,” Holmes outlined. Stay tuned to cecildaily.com, as more information about this developing situation becomes available.

Sinkhole closes North Ogle Street in Charlestown

CHARLESTOWN — Town officials closed North Ogle Street briefly Thursday morning after discovering a large portion of the street sinking. “We’re trying to figure out what’s causing it,” said Ken Hamilton, town administrator. One of the causes of the sinkhole might be an underground spring, he said. He noted that heavy construction equipment connected to a Cecil County wastewater treatment project may be partly to blame. “Allan Myers has been running equipment down there,” he said. Allan Myers is a construction and paving contractor with a location in Cecil County. Bobby Straiton, Charlestown’s Public Works chief, said while the sunken portion itself is about 6-by-5-feet, the compromised asphalt measures 20-feet-by-8. The asphalt had not yet opened but was severely cracked and sunken down. “We closed it down for safety reasons,” Hamilton said. The road is now re-opened with steel plates in place as a stop gap. Any repairs will have to take certain infrastructure into play, he added. “There’s a town water line that runs down that side of the street and a sewer line on the other,” Hamilton said. Sawhorses were blocking the road Thursday morning, but Hamilton said steel plates were brought in to open the road for
