Holly Hall students showered with Morning Smiles with Moms! support
ELKTON — As students made their way into Holly Hall Elementary School last Friday morning, they walked through what can best be described as a pep rally. The youngsters were met by a receiving line of a few dozen mothers of Holly Hall pupils who enthusiastically shook blue-and-white pompoms and cheerfully welcomed the students to school. Teachers and staff members also took part. “Good morning!” and “Have a great day!” were among the upbeat greetings uttered repeatedly to the arriving students by those in the receiving line. One woman periodically danced and shook her pompoms while chanting, “Good morning to you, good morning to you,” in sing-song fashion reminiscent of the “Happy Birthday” tune, evoking smiles and giggles from passing pupils. Such was the scene on the morning of Oct. 30 during the inaugural Morning Smiles with Moms!, an event organized by Holly Hall counselor Tahiya James, whose goals were to “create a warm, welcoming and positive start” to the school day for students and to “showcase the importance of family involvement and community engagement in our school.” Approximately 45 mothers of Holly Hall students had accepted the school’s invitation to participate in the event, according to James who, along

'You are not alone': Community prayer vigil offers support for those affected by Main Street shooting
Newark and University of Delaware community members came together Tuesday evening to pray for the victims of Saturday's mass shooting on Main Street and begin to process their feelings about the traumatic night. The prayer service took place at Newark United Methodist Church, just a couple blocks away from where a gunman opened fire into a crowd three days earlier, injuring seven people and sending hundreds of panicked Halloween revelers running for safety. Joined by clergy members from several other Newark churches, the Rev. Tonya McClain, senior pastor of Newark UMC, led attendees in prayer and hymns. "We've come to lift up our whole community this evening, that there might be healing," McClain said. "So we turn our hearts to you, O God, and our hope and our strength is in you." The pastors offered prayers for the victims of the shooting, several of whom are still hospitalized, as well as their family members and friends and the first responders who rushed to the chaotic scene Saturday night. "Gracious God, we thank you that you care for us," said the Rev. Cynthia Robinson, pastor of New Ark United Church of Christ. "For every person that experienced that danger Saturday evening,

SPORTS BUZZ: Newark Charter celebrates one state title, hopes for another
On Monday night, I was on the sideline for Newark Charter’s final Unified flag football game of the regular season. It was senior night, so five players and a manager were celebrated before the game. At halftime, the 2016 state championship team was recognized. And when the final horn sounded, the Patriots had clinched a spot in the state tournament with a 48-24 victory. It was a great all-around night for everyone involved, past and present. “It was a meaningful thing for my sister Hannah and I to be on the same team because that was the first experience we had being part of the same team and making history,” Jon Tressler, a player on the 2016 title team, reminisced about what was the school’s first state title in any sport. “Special Olympics events in general impacted my personal life, of course, but then professionally, I found a career that was meaningful for me,” said Tressler, who now works as a special education speech pathologist. “It means a lot to my family to be back here at Newark Charter. And it’s nice knowing that winning the state title will always hold a place in our heart and that we’re all
