Area marijuana licenses agree to $33,000 in fines for violations
Licensed marijuana dispensaries in Quincy, Reading, and Coldwater settled regulatory complaints with their owners through consent orders that were released last week by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency. Joyology - Quincy and Reading The former operator of Joyology medical marijuana stores in Quincy and Reading agreed to pay $30,000 in state fines for regulatory violations from 2022. The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency fined BRT Capital 3 LLC, doing business as Joyology of Quincy, $25,000 and Joyology of Reading $5,000. The parties signed the consent orders on Sept. 16, 2026. The Quincy case involved the former medical provisioning center at 104 W. Chicago St. During a July 19, 2022, inspection, regulators found 30 containers of medical marijuana and 582 packages without state tracking tags or numbers. Investigators also found an unauthorized transfer to another provisioning center. The same address now operates as Smilez of Quincy under an adult-use retailer license. The $5,000 Reading case involved the former medical provisioning center at 112 S. Main St. Regulators found discrepancies between physical inventory and the state's tracking system, as well as unauthorized transfers to another provisioning center. The Reading location now operates as Joyology - Recreational under an adult-use retailer license. BRT Capital

Buried building discovered during permanent Christmas tree installation in Albion
ALBION, Mich. — A buried building was discovered in Albion during a permanent Christmas tree installation. What started as a straightforward plan to plant a permanent Christmas tree at Bournelis Park turned into a major cleanup after crews uncovered what appeared to be remnants of a buried building beneath the site.

Clothing-clogged sewer reveals century-old pipe as Albion council meets on election eve
The election was still a day away, but signs of it were evident in Albion City Council chambers Monday evening. Mayor Victoria Garcia-Snyder led the meeting wearing an American flag sweatshirt, and a large VOTE sign stood in front of Council member Lenn Reid’s seat. Few people were in the audience, and the mood was mostly friendly. The council completed its agenda in about 26 minutes.

Adrian approves homelessness pilot program 'Find a Way Home'
The Adrian City Commission approved a pilot program to help individuals affected by homelessness reconnect with family, rehabilitation programs or other support outside the city Nov. 2. "Find a Way Home" was approved as a short-term goal after making homelessness one of four immediate city priorities Oct. 19. Officials previously discussed modeling the effort after Kalamazoo’s “Finding Your Way Home,” which helps individuals affected by homelessness reconnect with family and other support systems. As of August 2025, that program had reunited nearly 70 people with their families since 2023, according to reporting by WWMT. Mayor Angela Heath said the goal of the new pilot is to help those who want to improve their circumstances by providing a safe destination. “To get them to that family, to get them to that rehab or whatever it might be,” Heath said. Commissioner Charles Moore questioned whether the program would serve solely city residents or others who've traveled from elsewhere and are staying at Share the Warmth. Heath said it could serve either, including local residents with family outside the area. Moore also questioned whether vacated shelter beds would simply be filled by other people. Albion woman charged in December 2024 fatal crash
COLDWATER, MI — The Oct. 27 bomb threat that closed the Branch County Courthouse postponed Trudy Marie Johnson’s preliminary examination until December. Johnson, 52, faces charges of operating with a suspended, revoked, or denied license causing death. According to the complaint, Johnson allegedly caused a December 2024 head-on crash that later claimed the life of 87-year-old Lewis Marvin of Union City. Assistant Prosecutor Vaughn K. Stecker authorized the warrant on July 9, a year and a half after the crash. Court records show Johnson turned herself in on July 22 and was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. Her Oct. 27 court hearing was delayed by the bomb threat, first to Nov. 3 and now to December. The 15-year felony charge stems from a Dec. 20, 2024, head-on crash on M-60 near Stanton Road in Sherwood Township. The Branch County Sheriff's Department reported that Johnson, then 50 and living in Battle Creek, was driving east shortly before 6 a.m. when her vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a westbound vehicle driven by Marvin, with Diane Marvin as a passenger.
