Toledo gas prices rise as national average declines
TOLEDO, Ohio — Following Toledo's roughly 43-cent drop in average gasoline prices earlier this month after Ohio's recently enacted fuel tax cuts, prices reversed course in the past week and rose nearly 22 cents to an average of $4.05 per gallon. The average price represents an increase of about...

Road Warrior: New work zone starts on Woodville Road near I-280
While we’ve reached the time of year when roadway projects tend to start winding down, a new one started up late last week in Northwood. A city project to resurface Woodville Road, part of State Rt. 51, between Owen Road and I-280 started Thursday with work on the westbound right lane from State Rt. 579 to Lemoyne Road. City officials expect work to continue through mid-November, and if Thursday’s startup is a guide, it will cause delays. Walbridge Road and State Rt. 795 are both reasonable alternatives for Route 51 traffic to or from I-280. Consider using Bradner and Curtice roads as an alternative to the west end of Route 579. A busy East Toledo street, meanwhile, will be blocked for three days for pavement repair. First Street will be closed southbound between Oak and Utah streets. This is the section that becomes Miami Street at a curve just south of Utah. A posted detour will use Oak and Fassett streets. **** Wee-hours drivers on northbound I-75 in Wood County won’t be able to get directly onto northbound I-475/U.S. 23 for a few hours early Tuesday. A guardrail repair will close that ramp from 2:30 a.m. until about 5 a.m.,

Reconstruction closes several Toledo streets
Roadway reconstruction will close two Toledo streets for about a month each starting Monday, the Toledo Department of Transportation announced. In the North End, Ontario Street will be closed between Cincinnati Street and the dead end behind Riverside Elementary School. And in West Toledo, Buell Avenue will be closed between Sylvania and Berdan avenues. Local access will be maintained. Final paving following reconstruction of Wayne Street that started Friday in South Toledo has closed several cross streets through this week, including Champion, Dale, Eldred, and Gibbons streets. Access is maintained via Western Avenue. Utility work Monday through Thursday will close Ogontz Street between Devonshire Road and Stengel Avenue, the transportation department also said.

Ohio’s temporary gas tax suspension brings mixed savings at the pump
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Filling up is getting a little cheaper across Ohio, but just how much cheaper depends on where you stop. In Fremont, regular gas ranged from about $3.79 to nearly $4 a gallon. Around Toledo, some stations charge closer to $3.60, or even less, depending on where you go.

Editorial: Build bypass now for time, gas savings
To offer an obvious transportation-related metaphor, the report from the state Department of Transportation on the feasibility of a U.S.23/I-71 Connector is a green light. The timeline of the proposed project, however, is far too slow. Waiting until 2035 to begin construction is an unwise delay in a long-needed highway to speed up access from Toledo to the state capital region. Read more editorial To be sure, big money is involved — about $1 billion — to bypass the multiple traffic signals and growing congestion on U.S. 23 in Delaware County. The Connector Feasibility Study predicts a $6 to $1 return on investment from a highway beginning north of Waldo, Ohio, and slanting southeast to I-71. The biggest benefit is to life itself as decreased crashes provide most of the benefit. Trucks from Toledo won’t have to operate in stop and go traffic on U.S. 23. The savings in time and fuel consumption contribute still more economic benefit. Ohio’s new governor, whether Republican Vivek Ramaswamy or Democrat Amy Acton, must prioritize ODOT projects based on their economic impact. Few will have as much benefit to the overall state economy as the first commercially viable highway connection between Toledo and Columbus

Utility work to block Dorr near UT
Utility work will close Dorr Street’s eastbound lanes at Secor Road for four hours Thursday evening, the Toledo Department of Transportation announced. The work at Dorr and Secor will start at 8 p.m. and will also close Secor between Kiel Road and Dorr, officials said. Eastbound Dorr will be detoured via Secor to Bancroft Street, University Hills Boulevard, and Douglas Road. Traffic arriving on southbound Secor will be sent west on Dorr to southbound Byrne Road, then east on Nebraska Avenue and north on Westwood Avenue back to Dorr. Drivers who anticipate the closing can use eastbound Bancroft to University Hills and Douglas to save time and mileage. Separate utility work will cause lane closings throughout the day Thursday and on Friday on southbound Douglas at Sylvania Avenue, the city said.
