Appalachian Community Histories – Buxton, Panola County: Railroads, Gravel Pits, and a Forgotten Mississippi Community. In the northwestern corner of Panola County, Mississippi, near the boundary of the Mississippi Delta and the wooded uplands that rise above it, lies the history of a small community called Buxton. Unlike the larger towns of Batesville, Sardis, and Crenshaw, Buxton never developed into a major commercial center, and much of its past survives not in traditional town histories but in railroad documents, geological surveys, court proceedings, and historical maps. Those scattered records reveal a community whose importance was closely tied to the railroad and the gravel deposits beneath the surrounding countryside.

Along Ballentine Road in Panola County, Mississippi, lies a community whose history reaches beyond the name appearing on modern maps. Ballentine, an unincorporated settlement situated approximately three miles south of Pleasant Grove and four and a half miles south-southwest of Curtis Station, belongs to the network of small rural communities that developed across northern Mississippi during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although it never became a major town or county seat, its appearance in federal geographical records, postal directories, and local historical collections provides evidence of a community whose identity survived long after its post office disappeared.

In the heart of Panola County, Mississippi, the city of Batesville developed from a small railroad settlement into one of northern Mississippi’s important centers of commerce, government, and community life. Its history stretches far beyond the arrival of the railroad in the nineteenth century, reaching back to Native American communities that occupied the surrounding landscape nearly two thousand years ago. Over the generations, the area witnessed the displacement of the Chickasaw people, the decline of once-prosperous river settlements, the upheaval of the Civil War, the expansion of agriculture and industry, and the long struggle for African American civil rights.
