Fresno City Council tables SEDA indefinitely. ‘We have beat this dead horse enough'
In a staggering supermajority vote, the City Council has indefinitely tabled Fresno’s controversial plan to expand the city’s southeast side, likely killing it. The council chambers were packed Thursday evening with hundreds of residents prepared to tough out an hours-long hearing similar to last year’s vote to revise the Southeast Development Area Specific Plan and its environmental impact report. But in council member Mike Karbassi’s opening remarks to the crowd, he made the motion to table the plan, also known as SEDA. “I don’t think much has changed since last December,” Karbassi said. “I think we have beat this dead horse enough, and it’s clear there is no political will or ability to actually sustain SEDA within the city of Fresno.“ “Rather than open up those old wounds again, I’m going to make a motion to table this item indefinitely so it doesn’t ever come back again,” Karbassi said. Council member Miguel Arias seconded Karbassi’s motion, and it passed 6-1, followed by a roaring round of applause. The proposal to expand the city’s borders by rezoning 9,000 acres of mostly farmland in unincorporated Fresno County to the east and south to make room for up to 45,000 homes has been

Newcomer takes lead in tight Clovis City Council race. He'd be the youngest ever
Political newcomer Mason Magsig took the lead in one of Clovis’s new City Council districts, where he also out-earned campaign contributions compares to any other candidate in the city’s three races. Magsig tallied 56.8% of the expected vote through two waves of tallies on the night, while Maeketah Sayasane garnered 42.6%. Magsig is the son of Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig, who is expected to win his own election for the state Senate District 12. The younger Magsig is a commercial banker and real estate agent, and said he believed his age resonated with voters. The council tends to skew older and have established families. “I am just now getting to that point in life, and I bought my first home a year ago, and I know the cost of living firsthand because I’m dealing with it,” the 22-year-old said. “I think that’s something that differentiated me from my opponent, but also it gives a good perspective to the council that was non-existent prior.” If elected, Magsig will become the youngest councilmember in Clovis history, breaking the record set by his father, who served Clovis constituents for 16 years, by about 14 months, Magsig told The Fresno Bee. “I’m just
