The Rose Quarter Freeway Widening Sucks . . . Sucks up all the money
The largely un-funded $3.5 billion I-5 Rose Quarter Project will suck up all of the available revenue for transportation improvements in Portland, likely for decades to come. If there’s some other transportation investment you’d like to see–bike lanes, transit, safer streets, fixing potholes, whatever–you can pretty much give up on that because the “commitment” to filling the $2 to $3 billion hole will be in line ahead of you for every imaginable source of financing.

A Midpoint Status Check on How the I-5 South Freeway Closure Is Going
We’ve passed the halfway point of the five-week Interstate 5 southbound closure. Before the closure began Sept. 11, the Oregon Department of Transportation warned that travel times through the sticky parts—such as getting around the 2-mile closure via I-205 or I-405—could take two to three times longer than usual. It hasn’t been quite that bad, but almost: Travel times are double to 2.25 times as long as normal during the afternoon peak.
