Referendum results: Winter school funding passes; Town of Hayward facilities proposal rejected

Winter School District voters on Tuesday Nov. 3 passed an operational funding referendum by a vote of 1,174 ‘Yes’ to 546 ‘No.’ Town of Hayward voters rejected a facilities referendum proposal to renovate the existing town hall and build a new fire station and highway department facility, with a vote of 1,067 ‘No’ to 657 ‘Yes.’ Other Sawyer County vote totals from Tuesday’s election included: —Governor/Lieutenant Governor: Tom Tiffany/David Varnam (Republican) 5,123; David Crowley/Sarah Godlewski (Democrat), 4,058. In the state-wide vote, Crowley/Godlewski won over Tiffany/Varnam, 54.1% to 45.9%. —U.S. Congress 7th District Representative: Michael Alfonso (R), 4,930; Fred Clark (D), 4,174. District-wide, Alfonso won, 56.1% to 43.9%. —State Senator, District 25: Erik Severson (R), 5,082; Charly Ray (D), 4,053. District-wide, Severson won by 52.8% to 47.2%. —State Assembly, District 74: Chanz Green (R), 5,063; Paul Johnson (D), 4,032. District-wide, Green won, 58.3% to 41.7%. —Wisconsin Attorney General: Josh Kaul (D), 4,099; Eric Toney (R) 5,016; state-wide, Kaul won over Toney, 54.7% to 45.3% —Running unopposed, Bryan Deyo received 7,060 votes for Sawyer County Sheriff, and Marge Kelsey received 7,024 votes for Sawyer County Clerk of Court.

Cannon Falls Bomber girls soccer played in the Minnesota State High School League’s Class A state quarterfinals Thursday evening, Oct. 29, in Spring Lake Park where they fell to top-seeded Esko 2-0. The Bombers battled Esko to a scoreless tie in the first half but ran out of gas in the second half under a relentless Esko attack. Canes football players honored for effort, accomplishments

Hayward-LCO Hurricanes football players were honored for their efforts and accomplishments this past season and in their high school careers during an awards banquet Tuesday Oct. 27. “Be proud of yourself,” Coach Noah LeBlanc told the players. The team lost 20 players from the previous year due to graduation, and coaches asked a lot of underclassmen to play big roles on the varsity, he said. “These freshmen, sophomores and juniors did a tremendous job stepping up. The future is super bright.” The varsity “stuck together and had the best team camaraderie we’ve had,” LeBlanc said, “They finished the year with two big wins.” The Canes had eight seniors this year, and “They embodied what it means to be a Hurricane. They never made excuses. They gave everything they had. We will miss these guys a ton,” LeBlanc said. The seniors are Caleb Springer, Gabe Bisonette, Davin Suo, Brendan Young, Chaska Carrillo, Thomas Girard, Cardin Nguyen and Jaycee Denomie. Seven Canes were voted onto the Heart O’ North All-Conference Team for 2026. They are: Pryce Magnuson, second team offensive lineman; Caleb Springer, second team quarterback; Gabe Bisonette, second team running back; Caleb Springer, second team defensive cornerback; and Honorable Mention players

HHS students to perform fall play 'The Liar'

Hayward High School Drama Club members will present their next great performances Friday through Sunday Nov. 6, 7 and 8 at the ADS Auditorium. The student thespians are diving into Carlo Goldoni’s “The Liar” in Tunk Yalman’s vibrant translation, a play about storytelling—both the intoxication of exaggeration and its inevitable consequences. They grapple with the questions: What is truth? Why do we lie? And what happens when our lies spiral out of control? “Join us and find yourself laughing at Lelio’s audacity, cringing at his close calls, and perhaps recognizing a bit of yourself in his predicament. After all, we’re all storytellers in our own lives,” said Play Director Mike Anderson. “The question Goldoni poses is: Can we learn to tell the truth before our lies catch up with us?” Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday Nov. 6-7 and 1:30 p.m. Sunday Nov. 8. Admission is $5 per person; students are admitted free.

Former board member sues Ashland School District in federal court

A former Ashland School Board member has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the School District of Ashland and its Board of Education. Kelly Maday, an Ashland resident, filed the suit Aug. 31 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. She alleges the district and board retaliated against her for comments she made as a board member at a March 20, 2024, board meeting, in violation of her free speech rights under the First Amendment. The suit quotes part of the board’s censure of Maday, which stated that “Board Member Maday exceeded her role and authority as a School Board member by her behavior and comments” at that meeting. According to the complaint, her comments grew out of concerns she had raised with Superintendent Rob Prater about what the complaint called “unauthorized facility usage” of the district’s athletic and weightlifting facilities. The complaint said Prater denied her requests to place her concerns about facility access on a committee meeting agenda or the school board agenda. When she sought more detailed information, she was called to a meeting with Prater and then-board President Jeff Moravchik, where she was told her inquiries and information gathering amounted to “an

3 members of grade school class reunite

HAYWARD — Last week, the three remaining members of a grade school class met at Lakewood Cafe in Hayward. In the fall of 1948, four 6-year-old kids started first grade at the Roosevelt Consolidated School in Roosevelt Township (Burnett County). The large, two-room brick school was built in 1918 to accommodate 80 students (a level almost met in future years). Pictured L-R are Gene Romsos, Long Lake/Sarona, Lynnette (Johnson) Flottam, Hayward, and Dale Hile, Siren. Unfortunately, the fourth member, Donna (Erickson) Lawrence, passed away in December 2025. Flottum’s husband, Jim, was a teacher in the Hayward school system for many years. Her daughter, Shellee Wampole, also taught in the Hayward school system and just retired last spring.
