WATERLOO, Iowa — Big Head Burger will offer a free meal to veterans and active-duty military members on Veterans Day. The offer is available from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the restaurant, 324 W. La Mie Elevate is moving out of the Des Moines skywalk. Here's where

A favorite Des Moines lunch spot will receive grant funding to relocate its downtown cafe to street level from the second-floor skywalk. Des Moines City Council members on Monday, Nov. 2, approved a $200,000 grant to help La Mie, a French-style bakery, patisserie and cafe known for its artisan breads, flaky croissants and European light fare, transition to its new ground-floor home, 319 Seventh St., Unit 101, in the Griffin Building from the second floor of the Two Ruan Building. Council member Mike Simonson abstained from the vote because of a small ownership stake in the Griffin Building, he told the Des Moines Register. Since 2017, the Two Ruan Building has housed the bakery's downtown restaurant, La Mie Elevate, luring lunchtime crowds with an assortment of grain and protein bowls, sandwiches and salads. But as the bakery's lease agreement ends and Two Ruan prepares for an office-to-residential conversion , La Mie's owners have been eyeing a move to the vacant storefront at the corner of Seventh and Locust to maintain a downtown presence. Where to find old-school supper club dining in Des Moines

The Midwest supper club has always been more than a restaurant with low lights, stiff drinks and sizzling steaks. While Iowa never developed Wisconsin's dense supper‑club map, Des Moines has long embraced the spirit with neighborhood institutions with loyal regulars, retro charm and menus built around steak, seafood, pasta dishes and comfort food. While there's no one definition of a supper club, some of the telltale signs include dim, moody lighting with interiors that feel cozy, retro and unhurried. Wood-paneled walls, vinyl booths and vintage neon signs often decorate these spaces. A good supper club treats the bar as a main social hub. Diners often wait for a table here with a cocktail in hand. Often a supper club offers steaks, walleye, a prime rib night, pastas, a relish tray and ice cream drinks such as a Grasshopper, Pink Squirrel or Golden Cadillac. Of course, not all of these elements are necessary. Some supper clubs from the past include Sam & Gabe’s, a long-running local favorite known for fine dining, Italian-American dishes and supper club flair, with past locations in Clive and Urbandale.
