“Trojan Horse” Award Trots Across AHS Departments

Lindsey Roberts recently received the Atlantic High School’s Trojan Horse award. She received it from Cody Bartz. The Trojan Horse is a small brass statue which is awarded, teacher to teacher, for outstanding work. The award was started by AHS Principal Jim Brauer at the start of this year. Roberts teaches English Learners (EL) and helps in classrooms. Roberts said that when she received the Trojan Horse, Bartz said he gave it to her “for the work she does with the EL students.” The person Roberts said she was thinking about giving it to next helps with achieving the learning targets for the EL students. On Oct. 28, Roberts awarded the Trojan Horse to Lexi Griffen-Uren.

Omaha professor declines offer to lead Center for Intellectual Freedom

IOWA CITY — The Board of Regents’ top choice to direct its Center for Intellectual Freedom at the University of Iowa turned down the job Tuesday and instead took a position at the University of Florida — sending the University of Iowa-based center into a second year without a permanent director and extending its time without any director at all. University of Nebraska-Omaha political science professor Carson Holloway had been negotiating terms of employment with the Board of Regents since it made him a public offer Oct. 20 — following closed-door interviews with three finalists. But he turned down the job in deference to a tenured professorship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, according to a letter Holloway provided regent Christine Hensley on Tuesday. “I write to thank you and the other members of the Iowa Board of Regents for offering me the position of director of the Center for Intellectual Freedom,” Holloway wrote. “I believe strongly in (its) principles and mission, and it would have been my honor to be the center’s leader.” Holloway in that message said he enjoyed connecting with the board and took the Florida position “after careful consideration.” “I came away from my interview

Audubon takes on North Union with Trip to the Dome on the line

The 10-0 Audubon Wheelers will meet the 9-1 North Union Warriors on Thursday night in the high school football quarterfinals. Audubon is coming off of two dominant playoff victories, 54-12 over East Union and 72-30 over Clarksville. North Union has wins over Janesville (55-0) and Kingsley-Pierson 68-50. Both teams highlight strong rushing games. Wheelers’ Aiden Kjergaard has collected 1568 yards and 32 touchdowns, while North Union has two 1000 yard rushers: QB Greyson Colegrove and RB Carson Crouch. Both have reached the endzone twenty times. Statistically both teams are almost identical on paper with North Union having the slight edge in the pass games. Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks is proud of his guys for reaching this point in the season.
