Rock Port students, staff endure construction 'new normals'
(Rock Port) -- Construction work continues unabated in the Rock Port R-2 School District. Back in April, voters approved a $6.5 million bond issue for numerous facility upgrades. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Line" program Friday morning, Rock Port R-2 Superintendent Dr. Rex Bollinger says contractors recently poured the slab for a new facility replacing the former dome structure demolished last summer. Bollinger says the district now awaits steel studs for walls to be erected. One recent setback involves some construction-related damage to the high school gym floor.

Shen pregnancy center project nears finish line
(Shenandoah) -- Officials with Shenandoah's new pregnancy and resource center are planning a late-January opening. Finishing touches remain for the new building located at the corner of 300 North Sycamore Street and 505 West Valley Avenue. Shenandoah's City Council sold the parcel to SPARC last year for $100. After several months of work, SPARC Spokesperson Kathy Langley says the project is nearing completion.

UPDATE: Local agencies answer Shen nursing home evacuation call
(Shenandoah) -- Numerous local agencies responded to a carbon monoxide leak at a Shenandoah nursing facility Thursday morning. Shortly after 9 a.m., Shenandoah's Fire Department and Shenandoah EMS responded to Accura HealthCare of Shenandoah at 1203 South Elm Street for a reported carbon monoxide leak within the facility. Upon first responders' arrival, nursing home staff were in the process of evacuating residents per protocol. Firefighters entered the building and discovered high levels of carbon monoxide within the structure and confirmed a full evacuation was necessary.

Four empty Union Pacific rail cars derail near Sidney rail yard
SIDNEY -- Union Pacific crews were busy today cleaning up after a four-car derailment near the Union Pacific yard in Sidney. The derailment started at about 7:30 a.m. today. All four cars were reported empty at the time of the derailment. No injuries occurred during the incident. UP crews were still at the scene near 8th Avenue and Illinois Street at 4 p.m.

Suspects nabbed in Fremont County drug busts
(Sidney) -- Fremont County authorities are reporting a pair of unrelated drug busts over the past week. The Fremont County Sheriff's Office says 37-year-old Stephanie May McNutt of Council Bluffs was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of fentanyl, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, bringing contraband into a correctional facility, a drug tax stamp violation and providing false identification information to law enforcement. The arrest stems from an incident last Friday, in which the suspect was found walking in the 2200 block of Highway 2 shortly after 6 p.m. Deputies made contract with the woman, who allegedly provided a false name. McNutt was later found in possession of approximately 7 grams of meth and a small bag of a substance testing positive for fentanyl.
