Urine smell, bugs in liquor, old foods & more at Wichita KS restaurants, hotels

Urine odor in a stairwell, bugs in liquor, insects around food equipment, stained and torn bedding, old meat and milk, exposed carpet nails, smoke detectors that didn’t work, expired medication for sale and more are among violations state inspectors discovered during recent food safety and lodging inspections in the Wichita area. Each week, The Eagle adds to its searchable database of failed inspections from Sedgwick County. Seven restaurants, hotels and other businesses were non-compliant with state regulations Oct. 25-31. Inspectors found few or no violations that week at more than 30 other locations deemed compliant with food safety and lodging rules. Kansas Department of Agriculture inspections are meant to protect the public from foodborne illnesses and other health risks. Locations can fail if they have too many problems, certain types of violations or issues that can’t be fixed right away. Violations are common. Most of the time, they’re corrected in front of an inspector. Examples of things that can be addressed immediately include serving food that’s more than a week old, employees mishandling ingredients and dirty kitchens. Issues that may take longer to correct include pest infestations, power outages and plumbing problems. It’s rare, but a business may be temporarily

7 Russian Mennonite Foods from Kansas, Nebraska, and Manitoba

I use AI to help draft these articles. Every recipe and every fact in them is checked before publishing. When the first waves of Mennonite families left the Molotschna and Chortitza colonies in what is now Ukraine, they brought their foodways with them on the ships and trains that carried them to Kansas, Nebraska, and Manitoba through the 1870s. The settlements around Hillsboro and Goessel, Kansas, and the farm communities near Henderson, Nebraska, took shape fast: wheat fields, plain meetinghouses, and home kitchens turning out the same dishes their grandmothers had made on the steppe.

The latest on the two closed locations of Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Wichita

About a month ago, two of Wichita’s three Tropical Smoothie Cafes abruptly closed : The franchisee of the stores at 2768 N. Maize Road and at 9730 E. 21st St. sold them, and the new franchisee wanted time to do some renovations. But those two cafes will soon reopen, said new owner Aaron Toutloian. He’s aiming for Nov. 18. Toutlioan, who lives in Florida and owns 10 other Tropical Smoothie Cafes across the Midwest, said that because of equipment delays, he wasn’t actually able to make the kitchen upgrades he’d planned. “So we’ve decided to go ahead and open and just do the changes as we start getting the equipment,” he said. The stores will remain open, even while the equipment is being installed. Toutlioan said he’s been with the Tropical Smoothie Cafe chain since 2019 and originally bought franchises in Florida with his brother. Then the two decided to each run their own stores, Toutlioan said, and his brother still has 25 stores in Florida. Toutlioan, who is originally from St. Louis, said his stores are spread between Indiana and Kansas. His closest locations to Wichita are in Pittsburg and in Columbia, Missouri. In fact, he said, he’s considering

Take a look inside the new home of this longtime Wichita Mexican restaurant

It’s opening day for a popular west-side Mexican restaurant. Make that re-opening day. More than a week ago , Pedro Guevara closed his Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant, which he’d operated at 608 N. Tyler for nearly eight years, so that he could move it to a bigger spot less than half a mile away, at 756 N. Tyler. Guevara and his wife, Elizabeth Zaragoza, put on a ribbon cutting outside the new business this morning and now are welcoming customers in to celebrate their grand reopening. The hours, for now, are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Guevara said he plans to add Sunday hours — and Sunday brunch service — in about a month. The restaurant is serving the same Mexican specialties it did at its previous address with a few additions. Puerto Vallarta now has a second menu filled with American dishes such as pizza, sandwiches, chicken-fried chicken, chicken tenders and wings. Guevara decided to make the move not only because he’d outgrown his own space but also because he’d been having trouble with the air conditioning in his original building. Puerto Vallarta has taken over both the bar side and the restaurant side of the

Wichita bakery has quietly been selling homemade bread, croissants since spring

Wichita is chronically short on businesses that produce fresh-baked bread and pastries. But a new one has just opened downtown, and its young owners have quietly developed a loyal following. Dinky Bread opened in May in the space on the lower level of the Garvey Center , 220 W. Douglas, that most recently was occupied by a different bakery called Jake’s Fresh Bakes . The space also has been home over the years to Perfect Plate and an outpost of Reverie Roasters . The new bakery is owned by engaged couple Allie Owens and Ryan Porcu, who started their business at the Kansas Grown Farmer’s Market in 2025. From their booth, they’d sell Allie’s flaky croissants and crusty loaves as well as Ryan’s homemade cookies. The booth quickly earned return customers and frequently sold out completely before the market closed. Porcu said he realized that Owens — who he nicknamed “Dinky” — had skills that would be in demand in Wichita and suggested that they find a brick-and-mortar location. The two found the vacant space at the Garvey Center. They’re now open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, when they sell fresh-baked croissants, pastries, sandwiches on Owens’

7 dishes families ordered at Pizza Hut in the red-tablecloth days, from pan pizza to garlic bread

The first Pizza Hut opened in Wichita, Kansas in 1958, and for the next three decades the chain meant a real table in a real building, not a box left on a porch. The dining rooms had red-and-white checked tablecloths, wooden booths worn smooth, and a jukebox in the corner of more than a few locations. Pitchers of soda reached the table first. The pizza came out of a pan so hot the cheese held its shape for a full minute before it settled.
