Janesville man held on $2 million bond on homicide charge, suspected of beating, strangling spouse

JANESVILLE — Janesville resident Andrew Bradley, 58, is in jail on a $2 million bond, charged with first-degree homicide after officials say his spouse was discovered dead in her apartment at 800 Myrtle Way on Oct. 25. Court Commissioner Mason Braunschwieg approved the $2 million bond, saying it was the “minimum” amount needed to make sure Bradley stays in custody following what the Rock County Medical Examiner says was the death of Melissa Bradley, 52 on Oct. 25. Police say in a criminal complaint filed with the Rock County District Attorney’s office that they found the Janesville woman dead on her apartment floor — lying on the living room carpet with her head on a throw pillow, a blanket pulled out flat over her and a bottle of red nail polish, a comb, an earring and a dog leash laid on her chest. Investigators describe injuries that indicate Melissa Bradley had been significantly beaten in the head and strangled. The medical examiner said in an announcement that Bradley had died in an “incident” at the 800 Myrtle Way apartment, but the medical examiner said the cause and manner of Bradley’s death were pending. The medical examiner’s announcement came after police

More than 67,800 voters turn out in Rock County, making real turnout more than half of eligible voters

JANESVILLE — Despite rainy weather Tuesday, more than 67,800 voters cast ballots in Rock County’s Nov. 3 general election, an increase of more than 2,200 voters compared to the 2022 election. Rock County Clerk Lisa Tollefson said 67,812 voters cast ballots. That represents a little more than half of the 129,654 eligible voters in Rock County. Unofficial election results can be found on the Rock County website. Tollefson said the voter registration numbers displayed on the county’s website reflect registered voters as of 20 days before the election. Based on that figure of 97,850 registered voters, the turnout would be just under 70%. However, Wisconsin allows voters to register on Election Day, meaning the number of eligible voters can differ from the number of registered voters listed before the election. Tollefson said she noticed increased engagement during this year’s election, including a larger number of election observers. At Janesville City Hall, she said there were six observers. She said there was a steady flow of voters throughout the day. While there were occasional bursts of activity, turnout remained consistent. Tollefson also noted that absentee ballots were up this year and said she felt there was more overall engagement compared to

Why some trees hold onto their leaves much longer in fall, explained

One look at the red, orange and yellow leaves clinging to trees and scattered on the ground makes it perfectly clear that fall is in full swing. But look closer and you might notice that while some trees are almost completely bare, others are stubbornly holding onto their leaves. Some difference in when leaves fall off trees isn't a surprise, but why do some trees seek to keep their leaves far longer than others?

Ember and Iron brings men's clothing back to Janesville's downtown

Ember and Iron has a poetic catharsis to it, even if the casual observer doesn't know the secret behind the new downtown retail store's name. Claudine Manor named her new independent clothing store a year ago; it simply took her a year to find the new location. Manor had previously operated Savannah and Pearl boutique in Edgerton at the former Lake House Inn supper club, which was destroyed in a fire Oct. 1, 2025. The Lake House fire prompted Manor to reconsider what she wants to do. The two elements that fire left were ember and iron. Manor decided to take the two elements, as words, Ember and Iron, as a concept, a statement renewal — of what she's doing now. And what Manor's doing is a pretty brave thing in downtown retail. She's designed and built out a storefront retail store with half the floor dedicated to new men's fashion – a retail offering which otherwise is next to none of in Janesville's downtown. Ember and Iron is on the street level at 319 W. Milwaukee St., in space that once housed the former Monterey Hotel lobby and restaurant. The building's upper six floors now house apartments. Manor's approach
