$4 Million Renovation Project Continues at Delaware County Rest Area

The Department of Transportation says a $4 million renovation project continues at a rest area in Delaware County. Work continues on the East Branch Rest Area along westbound State Route 17 in the Town of Hancock. The rest area was closed starting in mid-October, as rehabilitation work began. That work included installing perimeter fencing and portable toilets, along with pouring the concrete substructure, removing existing asphalt shingles, and work began on the installation of a new leach field for the new septic system.

Broome County faces higher risk of mental health disorders compared to the rest of New York state

Broome County has been found to have disproportionately high numbers of mental health risk factors when compared to New York state averages. According to Mental Health America, New York state was found to have an average score of 30.2 individuals at risk for severe depression per 100,000 people in the state population. Broome County exceeds New York state’s average, with a scoring of 34.03 individuals at risk of severe depression per 100,000 people. Broome County also has higher averages than New York state for other mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal ideation.

Southern Tier trails are a gem. Summit aims to take them to next level

A day-long Southern Tier Greenways Planning Summit, hosted by Parks & Trails New York, took stock of the greenway trail plans already in motion across the region and tackled what it will take to link them into a connected regional network. The event, held Nov. 5 at the Corning Museum of Glass, focused on the eight-county Southern Tier Regional Economic Development region, which includes Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Broome, Chenango and Delaware counties. The event paired project updates from local and regional partners with hands-on working sessions on the challenges and opportunities ahead. Kamala Keeley, President of Three Rivers Development Corporation, said trails, waterways and parks aren't amenities on the side; they're part of what makes a region a place people choose to build a life. “When our employers recruit engineers, nurses, and skilled trades, candidates want to know what life looks like outside of work," Keeley said. Broome County housing advocates skeptical of city’s proposal to address homelessness they say falls short

Binghamton housing advocates say they’re skeptical of a new initiative in the city aimed at ending street homelessness and encampments. Mayor Jared Kraham said the city will contract with Catholic Charities of Broome County to fund housing subsidies for people living in the encampments. Street outreach teams will go to each encampment to move people into homes, according to a press release from Kraham’s office.
