North Medford stalls in playoff-opening loss at No. 3 Nelson
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Black Tornado score on 1 of 4 trips inside Hawks’ 25-yard line to fall short in 6A championship bracket. The big plays that were part of North Medford’s early and late-season success didn’t materialize on a cold and rainy night in Happy Valley, and the Black Tornado’s hopes of extending their run in the Class 6A football championship bracket were dampened because of it.

South Eugene girls soccer wins state playoff thriller on penalty kicks
Emma Pettersson insists she didn't feel all that nervous as she stepped up to the penalty spot for a moment that many high school players dream of experiencing. The way she saw it, she was playing with house money. But South Eugene's senior captain didn't leave her team waiting any longer; Pettersson calmly buried a match-winning penalty kick to keep the Axe's season rolling. After 80 minutes and an overtime period weren't enough to break a 1-1 deadlock, Pettersson and Class 6A No. 7 South Eugene beat No. 22 Beaverton 5-4 on penalties Nov. 4 in the second round of the OSAA Class 6A girls soccer state playoffs. On the back of a stellar 10-4-1 regular season campaign, the Axe are headed to the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2019. "That was the first penalty I've ever taken in a game," Pettersson said with a slight smile. "So, that was nice. That was fun." An all-state center back who has helped the Axe limit their opponents to just 19 goals this season, Pettersson didn't necessarily need to convert her attempt to keep her team alive. South Eugene and Beaverton each converted four of their first five attempts, which
