Lewis County resident questions nuclear company over jobs, land and what comes next

VANCEBURG, Ky. — Lewis County residents are getting their first chance to question The Nuclear Company, which wants to build a nuclear power site in the county. The Lewis County Chamber of Commerce met with a company representative on Oct. 29 at a pizza shop in Vanceburg to discuss the proposed project, called Prosperity One. The company says that if approved, the site could host up to six reactors and generate 6.6 gigawatts of electricity.

Cloverlick Creek Dam, a 500-ton concrete structure in Bethel, is scheduled for removal later this month. The village built it in 1941 to provide a drinking water reservoir. Mayor Jay Noble of Bethel said the 2006 costs for repairs and maintenance of the dam and pump house had become too costly for the village to afford. With alternate sources of water available, the decision was made to shut down the pump station and purchase water from the Tate-Monroe Water Association. Mayor Noble said the dam has become a potential public safety hazard and a liability for the village.

October permit report shows new billboard added to Bridge Street

CHILLICOTHE— In October, the Ross County building department reported 44 records for construction happening in public and residential buildings. These records help give insight into what is happening at local businesses. In Ross County, a permit was issued for the installation of a new billboard on South Bridge Street. Southern Ohio Sports Authority received conditional approval for the foundation and structural framing only for a sports training facility in Kingston. Nationwide Children's Hospital is continuing work in Chillicothe, having recently received conditional approval for fire sprinkler renovation to an existing system. The health care organization announced earlier this year that a Close to Home Center for pediatric outpatient care was being built in the area. Pike Water received three permits for various sites within Piketon for a project that consists of a booster station upgrade for generators and automatic transfer switches. In Greenfield, the VFW Post received a permit for interior alterations and the Adena Greenfield Medical Center received a permit for the installation of a wall.
