County engineer recommends changes in speed limits
MARENGO — Iowa County Engineer Nick Amelon recommended changes in speed limits on some Iowa County roads last month. After the Iowa legislature increased the default speed on two-lane, paved highways from 55 to 60 mph, Amelon began checking the safety of county roads at those speeds. Amelon told supervisors Aug. 21 that he’d like to post a speed limit of 35 mph on F46 heading east out of Williamsburg. The speed limit was set at 55 mph at the edge of town, but immediately following that posting is a 35 mph curve. Amelon would like to keep the speed limit at 35 mph through the curve, he said. Currently a sign warns of a 35 mph curve ahead, but the speed limit remained 55 and was increased to 60 mph following the legislative decision. Amelon had the 60 mph sign removed pending a decision by county supervisors. Amelon showed supervisors a video from Amelon’s truck as he drove the route with an app that measures the bank of the road. Fifty miles per hour is too fast around that curve in either direction, Amelon said. Any banking over 12% is too fast at speeds over 35 mph. Supervisor Abby
