Area Woman Arrested After Early Morning Chase
An area woman was arrested and charged early Tuesday morning following a vehicle pursuit through Cedar Falls and Waterloo. 22-year-old Da Naiza Sallis had a warrant out for her arrest. Cedar Falls Public Safety attempted to stop her vehicle on West First Street around 5:30 Tuesday morning, but Sallis allegedly led officials on a chase. The pursuit ended in Waterloo with the vehicle being located near City View Street. Sallis was not inside the vehicle at the time. Around 20 minutes later, authorities located Sallis and took her into custody. She was charged with eluding, driving while barred and reckless driving. She’s been held on bond.

Man Arrested for Shutting Gas Off to Homes
A Waterloo man has been arrested for allegedly shutting off the natural gas to several homes, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 41 year old Joshua Conkling was arrested on Friday and charged with first degree Criminal Mischief by Interrupting Utilities and seven counts of Trespassing. Seven houses had their natural gas turned off on February 22nd. Police utilized surveillance video to identify Conkling. They approached him at his home, where he was allegedly wearing the same clothes he had on in the videos. Conkling had charges of punching a family member dropped a few months prior due to competency issues.
Grundy Center Man Arrested on Drug Charges
Grundy County authorities have arrested a Grundy Center man on multiple drug and weapon charges after executing a search warrant at his rural home. 20 year old Carter Jacobsen was taken into custody late last week. Deputies found 2 pounds of marijuana, assorted other drug paraphernalia, $8,000 in cash and an AR-15. Jacobsen made his initial appearance, and has been released after posting a surety bond.
Main Street and West 12th Street Reconstruction: Important Information for Cedar Falls Residents
Starting Monday, March 4, 2024, a contractor will start rebuilding Main Street. The work will be from the south side of the 10th Street intersection to the north side of the 13th Street intersection. West 12th Street/Waterloo Road will also be rebuilt from Washington Street to State Street. The project will close the road for about sixteen weeks, depending on the weather. Two area schools were in action yesterday at the girls State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines. The Go-Hawks trailed by as many at 10 points in the 3rd quarter. Waverly-Shell Rock improved to 24-0 with its quarterfinal win and will play Bishop Heelan in the semifinals tomorrow night at 6:45.
Fire Captain Died in His Home
The Cedar Falls Fire Department has released that one of its own has died:. Fire Captain Brad Sherwood, age 56, died at his home in Grundy County, Iowa on February 23rd, 2024. The Grundy County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Captain Sherwood joined the Cedar Falls Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1997. Four years later, in 2001, he was hired as a firefighter. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2009. Captain Sherwood served on all of the fire shifts over his decades of service, and he was the department’s subject matter expert in fire truck maintenance and firefighter protective gear. He received many awards and commendations throughout his career and he was honored as the Fire Department’s Fire Officer of the Year for 2015.

School to Purchase Land
Waterloo Schools has announced that they plan to purchase 30 acres of land for a new agriculture program as part of the Waterloo Career Center, according to KWWL. The land will be purchased for a price just shy of $730,000. The district says it will enhance the hands-on agricultural opportunities for the students. The closing date on the property will be on March 18th. The agriculture program will be one of four new programs coming to the career center this fall. The others include beauty, cosmetology, and criminal justice.

The University of Northern Iowa softball team has hit the ground running to start their 2024 season. The Panthers started the season on their home turf going 3-2 in the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic. Since then the women have gone 5-1 in their last six games, including a ranked victory over #24 Auburn in Alabama.
