Waterloo Feb 26 Weekly Crime Report: 212 Incidents and 7 Crime Stories. During the last week, a total of 212 crime cases were reported in Waterloo. The most common type of crime was 'Other' with 76 incidents, accounting for approximately 36% of the total crimes. This category included a wide variety of offenses such as disorderly conduct, traffic-moving violations, drug violations, and harassment. The second most common type of crime was 'Arrest' with 39 cases, followed by 'Theft' with 34 cases, and 'Suspicious Situation' with 27 cases. 'Assault' cases were also significant with 16 incidents reported. Less frequent but nonetheless concerning were 'Trespass' and 'Vandalism', each with 6 cases, 'Burglary' with 5 cases, and 'Violation' with 3 cases. This data suggests a need for increased vigilance and preventive measures against crime in the area.
Charges Upgraded in Shooting Case
Two Waterloo men have had their charges upgraded to Attempted Murder for a shooting back in December, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. 22 year old Dajoniss Morman-Jenkins and 29 year old Marqwane Smith were among several people who pulled up next to Richard Sturdivant sitting in his car shortly before 5pm on December 10th. The group pulled Sturdivant from the vehicle. Once out police believe Morman-Jenkins shot him several times. The others then dug through Sturdivant’s pockets before fleeing. Morman-Jenkins and Smith had been charged with Robbery, Burglary and Willful Injury. 24 year old Karondius Kelly received those same charges, his were not upgraded, however.

Fire Captain Died in His Home
The Cedar Falls Fire Department has released that one of its own has died:. Fire Captain Brad Sherwood, age 56, died at his home in Grundy County, Iowa on February 23rd, 2024. The Grundy County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Captain Sherwood joined the Cedar Falls Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1997. Four years later, in 2001, he was hired as a firefighter. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2009. Captain Sherwood served on all of the fire shifts over his decades of service, and he was the department’s subject matter expert in fire truck maintenance and firefighter protective gear. He received many awards and commendations throughout his career and he was honored as the Fire Department’s Fire Officer of the Year for 2015.

Waterloo Courses Open
All three golf courses in Waterloo have opened for the season. The unseasonably warm weather allowed for the courses to open about a month earlier than they did last year. Golfers took advantage over the weekend at South Hills, Gates Park, and Irv Warren Memorial. So long as course conditions and the weather allow, the courses will stay open throughout the season. Alcohol Compliance Checks
Cedar Falls Police performed I-Pledge compliance checks sponsored by the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division and caught three store clerks selling tobacco, alternative nicotine, or vape products to a minor. Underage undercover operatives supervised by police were sent in to a total of 41 stores to attempt to purchase products they were too young to buy. 37 year old Rahman Maqsood of Bani’s Liquor and Tobacco, 26 year old Vikash Vikash of Prime Mart, and 19 year old Alexia Downs of Panther Travel Center were all cited in the sting. Selling these products to minors carries a $135 fine for the first offense, $325 for the second, and $645 for the third or subsequent offense.
Waterloo Firefighters Put Out Apartment Fire
Waterloo Fire Rescue are continuing their investigation into a fire that occurred at an apartment building Thursday afternoon. Firefighters were called to 1047 Langley Road to find a fire in a third floor apartment. Residents got out of the building safely. There were no injuries and a cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

Northern Iowa wrestling finishes regular season with 27-11 win over Wisconsin
Northern Iowa wrestling rolled to a dominant victory over Wisconsin on Sunday, winning 27-11 over the Badgers in the Panthers' final regular-season dual of the season. The contest was tied at 11 after six bouts, with 133-pounder Julian Farber, 141-pounder Cael Happel and 157-pounder Ryder Downey each picking up wins, including a 22-6 technical fall for Happel over Felix Lettini. From 174 pounds on, the Panthers dominated.

CEDAR FALLS Iowa (KCRG) – Cedar Falls Fire Department Fire Captain Brad Sherwood passed away at his home Friday at the age of 56. Sherwood joined the department in 1997 as a volunteer. He was hired as a firefighter in 2001 and achieved the rank of captain in 2009. He was awarded the Fire Department’s Fire Officer of the Year for 2015. Those who worked with Sherwood acknowledged his leadership and love for his job in a press release: “Captain Sherwood was an outstanding leader and even better person. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like Brad. He was a pleasure to work with and he always created a family atmosphere on his shift. His skillset will be missed – and be hard to replace” Fire Chief John Zolondek. “Captain Sherwood was a caring and passionate leader. He always brought out the best in his team. He loved his job, always had a smile on his face, and will be missed by many in our community” Director of Public Safety Craig Berte. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
