Board adjusts capital projects plan for Calvert sheriff's office

North Beach man dies after motorcycle crash
Early Monday evening a 52-year-old North Beach man, reportedly traveling north on Chaneyville Road in the area of Flint Hill Road and Swan Lane, was killed when his 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle left the roadway and crashed. Richard Evan Ganyon Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office press release. Investigators from the sheriff’s office’s crash reconstruction team reported that, for unknown reasons, Ganyon lost control of the cycle on the unpaved shoulder. Ganyon is the fourth person to die on a Calvert County road in 2024. The crash reconstruction team’s investigation is being handled by Deputy Mike Lewis. Shed burns in Sunderland
On Sunday afternoon, April 28, crews were dispatched to a fire at a detached garage on Dorothy Drive in Sunderland. Firefighters arrived to find a two-story detached garage ablaze. Crews were at the scene for over two hours. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Huntingtown man charged with firing a gun a bicyclists
A 66-year-old Huntingtown man has been charged with assault and reckless endangerment after allegedly firing a shotgun at a couple participating in a charity bicycle rally in Calvert County on Saturday. According to court documents filed by Detective William Freeland of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, David Earl Bustin is alleged to have fired the weapon on Hardesty Road in Huntingtown around 10 a.m. April 27. Lusby woman convicted of federal fraud schemes
A 45-year-old Lusby woman was convicted on April 25 by a jury in federal court for conspiracies to commit passport, wire and bankruptcy fraud, as well as making a false statement in a bankruptcy proceeding. A U.S. Department of Justice press release stated that, according to testimony during defendant Charmaine Miesha Brown’s five-day trial in Greenbelt, in January 2014 Brown, a U.S. citizen, married Andrews Oduro Brown, a/k/a “Andrews Oduro,” a Ghanaian national who entered the U.S. in May 2013. Ruptured pipe causes sludge spill
Earlier this month Calvert County’s Department of Public Works, Water and Sewer Division reported that a ruptured pipe at Solomons Wastewater Treatment Plant on Sweetwater Road in Lusby led to a spill of sludge. In a press release, county government officials said there was no impact to drinking water. “On call staff received an alarm around 2:40 a.m. on April 14 and arrived at the Solomons plant by 3:15 a.m.,”...
Men charged in assaults at Calvert carwash
Two men who state troopers say started a fight at a Prince Frederick carwash during the midday hours of April 19 are facing assault charges. According to court documents, one of the instigators — identified as Dorian Lavant Dickerson, 21, of Lexington Park — is also charged with making a threat of mass violence for saying he was going to “shoot up” the carwash, which at the time had six employees working along with a dozen customers on the premises. ...

Huntingtown VFD hosts vendor fair
On April 13, the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department hosted a vendor fair for small businesses. The event was billed a day of "fun, community, supporting your local fire department." The volunteers had on display the prize vehicle for the 29th Classic Corvette Contest. The car is a 1965Corvette Convertible with a four-speed manual transmission and leather interior.
Car collides head-on with school bus
Shortly before 9 a.m. on April 12, crews were dispatched to Chesapeake Ranch Estates in Lusby where a school bus had collided head-on with a car. A report posted by Capt. Richard Lacey of the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department stated there were passengers on the bus. Three people were assisted with one transported for evaluation at a local hospital.
Crews dispatched to house fire
Shortly after noon on Sunday, units from fire companies in Calvert and Anne Arundel counties were sent to a house fire on Holiday Drive in Chesapeake Beach. Crews reported smoke showing from the two-story house. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
