Calvert deputies apprehend perfume theft suspects
Five out-of-state individuals — four men and a woman — have been charged with felony theft following last week’s alleged theft of nearly $8,000 worth of merchandise from Ulta Beauty in Prince Frederick. A view of the eclipse
On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse crossed North America with at least a partial view of the moon blocking out the sun throughout the continental U.S. As many as 4 million people were expected to travel to viewing sites across 13 states in the path of totality to view the moon completely blocking out the sun for between 3 and 4 minutes. That path starts in Mexico and then traverses Texas and 12 other U.S. states including Oklahoma, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, New York and into New England. In Southern Maryland, people ventured outside of their workplaces to parks and other areas to view the afternoon spectacle.
Fire damages Huntingtown house
Shortly after 1 p.m. on April 4, several Calvert County fire departments were dispatched to a house fire on Stella Drive in Huntingtown. According to a report from the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire was found in the basement of the house by the homeowner. Crews were able to bring the blaze under control in 30 minutes. No injuries were reported. Damage to the two-story, single-family dwelling owned by George and Connie Smith is estimated at $150,000. The fire marshal’s office investigation determined the fire was an accident.
Manor in Owings approved as wedding venue
There wasn’t a “neigh” to be heard April 4 as the Calvert County Board of Appeals unanimously approved allowing a wedding venue to be located at the same farm as a horse rescue operation. The new owner of Hampton Manor, a registered historic 14-acre property in Owings, was granted a special exception for rental facilities on farms for wedding events. Huntingtown man gets six months for animal cruelty cockfighting
A 37-year-old Huntingtown man found guilty earlier this year in district court of charges of animal cruelty related to cockfighting was sentenced March 29 by Judge Robyn Riddle. According to court records, most of defendant Luis Alberto Hinojosa Morales’ sentence was suspended. D.C. man pleads guilty to Calvert murder
A 28-year-old Washington, D.C., man could be facing a long period of incarceration in a state facility for the shooting death last August of a Prince Frederick man. On March 28, defendant Anthony Hill appeared before Judge Mark Chandlee in Calvert County Circuit Court for a motion hearing. Hill, who was represented by Maria C. Doerflinger and Caitlin J. Blaze damages house
Shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday morning, emergency crews were dispatched to Claggett Road in Sunderland for the report of a house fire. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the one-story, single-family dwelling owned by James Mackall sustained $125,000 damage that originated in the basement and spread to the rest of the house. Investigators reported the cause appeared to be accidental and was determined to be a space heater placed too closely to combustibles. “One occupant sustained a minor burn injury but refused medical treatment,” a fire marshal’s report stated. The residents were assisted by the American Red Cross.
