Yreka High School cancels remainder of 2026 football season
The Yreka High School football team has forfeited the remainder of the 2026 season. "Yreka High School has made the difficult decision to cancel the final two games of our varsity football season due to a lack of healthy, available players," Yreka Union High School District superintendent Matthew Dustan wrote in an email to the Record Searchlight. "Last Friday, our team competed with only 15 healthy, eligible athletes, and that number has dropped to 11 this week because of injuries and other factors affecting player availability. No players have been lost due to academic ineligibility." The Miners have been held winless through eight games this season. Yreka most recently faced Anderson on Oct. 23 and suffered a 29-18 loss. Yreka was scheduled to close out the season against Central Valley on Oct. 30 and Lassen on Nov. 6. Instead, both the Falcons and Grizzlies will earn automatic wins. Dustan said the decision was made in consultation with players, coaches and parents. Yreka considered elevating junior varsity players to the varsity team, but the program ultimately decided that it "would not be in their best interest for safety or development," Dustan said. Yreka's junior varsity team will still compete against Central
