Road Warrior: State officials tout safety record during National Roundabout Week
While the Toledo area has had quite a bit of rain lately, the Ohio Department of Transportation says its new roundabout on Maumee-Western Road (U.S. 20A) at Strayer Road remains on target to open in about three weeks. Curbs and gutters were completed last week, and Kelsie Hoagland, a spokesman at ODOT’s Bowling Green district office, said traffic islands and the crushed stone base will be started this week. Once stone is finished next week, paving will start, and paving and stripe painting are expected to be completed the following week. Some lighting might not be installed until after the roundabout opens. That’s all subject to suitable weather, of course. While some drivers consider roundabouts confusing, mainly because yielding to traffic in the circle is baffling or they don’t trust other drivers to follow that principle, highway officials say their safety record is compelling. To mark National Roundabout Week last week, ODOT issued a report noting substantial declines in, if not outright elimination of, fatal and serious injury crashes where roundabouts have replaced traditional intersections in northwest Ohio. While they don’t eliminate crashes entirely, roundabouts’ collisions mainly are sideswipes and rear-enders that rarely cause serious injury. Both ODOT and the

TARTA receives $1.3M grant to add, update bus shelters
The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority will add 27 new bus-stop shelters and renovate 28 others with a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation. On Friday, state officials announced that TARTA received $1.36 million from the ODOT Workforce Mobility Partnership program. The grant will help the transit authority “provide safer, more accessible, and weather-protected environments for riders traveling to major employment, education, healthcare, and commercial destinations,” officials said. It will improve access for people with disabilities, add lighting, enhance visibility of the stops, and allow pedestrians to connect more easily. The state’s funds will be matched with a local investment of about $340,000. “When we connect workers directly to reliable transportation, our entire economy improves,” said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. “This new round of funding ensures that hard-working Ohioans can easily reach growing employment centers, helping businesses stay fully staffed and competitive.”

ODOT taking comments about Dorr Street culvert project
An upcoming culvert replacement on Dorr Street in Toledo is the subject of an open public comment period with the Ohio Department of Transportation. ODOT expects to close Dorr between Byrne and Richards roads for 90 days in the spring and summer of 2028 to replace the Heldman Ditch culvert, installed in the late 1950s. A planned detour will use Hill Avenue between Byrne and Reynolds roads. Lane closings are planned before and after the detour, with construction running for about five months. Public comments about the proposed project and its impacts may be submitted to ODOT by telephone at 419-373-4465; mail to project manager Adam Barnes, 317 E. Poe Rd., Bowling Green, OH 43402; or by emailing adam.barnes@dot.ohio.gov . A comment form is available at the project website, transportation.ohio.gov/101332 . The formal comment period is open through Oct. 19. Comments received after that time may still be considered, but will not be a part of the official public input document.
