TARTA rebrands bus service, discusses rapid transit plans
TARTA Metro will be the new name of Toledo’s bus service starting early next year, making room for a new rapid transit service being implemented by the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority. CEO Laura Koprowski, who has run the transit agency since 2020, said the rebrand aims to make the bus service easier to recognize and more inviting to ride. It will also distinguish the fixed-route bus service from its upcoming bus rapid transit service. “The new name reflects who we are today: a regional transit provider serving northwest Ohio. The name also reflects a fresh, modern approach to public transit designed to appeal to our longtime riders, welcome a new generation of customers, and invite those who are transit-curious to finally give TARTA a try,” Ms. Koprowski said. Bus rapid transit lines are similar to light rail systems, using buses with dedicated lanes, elevated platforms, and more frequent service. The transit authority’s line would run every 15 minutes between Sylvania and Oregon on Monroe Street , which is currently serviced by TARTA’s most popular bus route. Ms. Koprowski said the system would support residents in new housing, attract employers, and encourage restaurants and business to locate nearby, using Indianapolis,

Train carrying 4,000 gallons of diesel derails in North Toledo
A CSX Transportation container train derailed Friday afternoon in North Toledo. No one was injured and no hazardous materials leaked in the 4:15 p.m. derailment near Manhattan and Wallace boulevards, Assistant Chief John Kaminski of the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department said at the scene. But a locomotive that jumped the track had 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board, and that would need to be pumped out before emergency crews clear the scene, Chief Kaminski said. “We have a precautionary fire line set up in case something happens,” he said. A little more than an hour after the derailment, an environmental contractor had arrived to drain the engine of its fuel. The locomotive came to rest tilted, while three container platform cars behind it that also derailed remained upright. None of the freight in those containers contained anything dangerous, Chief Kaminski said. The only damage was to the track and railroad equipment. The derailment occurred at a junction where trains can change tracks, but it was not immediately known if that was a factor. Chief Kaminski said it would be up to CSX to determine the accident’s cause. Manhattan and nearby Suder Avenue were both closed near the derailment

Editorial: Toledo railroad infrastructure gains
Spending federal funds to upgrade an aging railroad bridge across the Maumee River was a wise investment in local infrastructure. Letting the Toledo Belt Bridge deteriorate any further would have necessitated removing it, and with it would have gone an important part of the logistical puzzle that contributes to Toledo’s industrial and transportation economy. Motorists on Summit Street between downtown Toledo and Point Place are familiar with the bridge if they look east near New York Avenue in the North End. U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) and U.S. Sen. Jon Husted (R., Ohio) shared the honor of announcing the planned $43.5 million upgrade to the old bridge. It’s known locally as the Toledo Belt Bridge, and officially as the Toledo Swing Bridge. Also, as the Toledo Pivot Bridge. The “swing” and “pivot” refer to what the bridge does when a train needs to cross. Otherwise, it is kept open so ships can sail through. The current owner is Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, having acquired it from Norfolk Southern for a mere $1 more than 20 years ago. Wheeling says there is freight that it can handle if the 1897 bridge is strengthened to handle freight cars weighing up
