Train Cars Derailed Thursday Near Belton
A train derailed Thursday morning in Anderson County, according to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred just after 11:30 a.m. on Beeks Road at Belton Honea Path Highway. Anderson County Fire Chief Jimmy Sutherland reported that two train cars overturned and another partially overturned, but there were no active leaks. Hazmat teams monitored the area, and heavy machinery was brought in Thursday evening to remove the train cars. Cleanup took several hours. The Belton-Honea Path Highway, which was closed after the derailment, has since reopened.

Judgeship seat opens for applications
Tenth Circuit Judge Maddox retires December 31; already, however, the process to pick his successor is underway. Sen. Thomas Alexander has learned that hopefuls for the job may apply beginning as early as Monday (July 29). The deadline to submit an application will be Thursday, August 29. Maddox, based in Anderson, is considered an at-large judge. Which means his successor, provided he or she is qualified and wins a vote of the Joint General Assembly, may come from anywhere within the state.
