House Fire in Hancock
(Hancock) Firefighters were called to a house fire on Kimball Street in Hancock at around 3:15 a.m. The home is a total loss. Hancock, Avoca and Oakland Fire Departments responded to the scene. We’ll have more information when it becomes available.
Freeze Warning and Frost Advisories Issued for Southwest Iowa
(Area) A Freeze Warning is in effect from 1:00 to 8:00 a.m. Friday for Audubon, Cass, Harrison, Shelby, Pottawattamie and Montgomery counties. The National Weather Service says sub freezing temperatures as low as 30 degrees is expected. Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Atlantic’s Newest Police Officer Sworn In
(Atlantic) Atlantic Mayor Grace Garrett administered the Oath of Office to new Atlantic Police Officer Kelby Smith at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. Smith was hired full-time with the Atlantic Police Department in April 2024. Kelby has been a member of our reserve unit since 2020. He graduated from CAM High School and has spent most of his life in Cass County. He has a previous background in public safety as a full-time EMT and a member of the Adair Fire Department. Kelby is married with three children and stays active, attending their sporting and special events. In his spare time, he enjoys working out and being outdoors.
Gov. Reynolds Issues Disaster Proclamation for Six Counties in Response to Severe Weather
(Des Moines) Wednesday, Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for Allamakee, Cass, Des Moines, Fayette, Henry, and Lee counties in response to severe weather that occurred on April 16. The governor’s proclamation activates the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and the Disaster Case Advocacy Program for those counties.

Griswold School Board Approves Three Sharing Agreements
(Griswold) The Griswold School Board approved three sharing agreements at Monday’s meeting. The first is the transportation director sharing agreement with Atlantic. Griswold Schools Superintendent Dave Henrichs says Atlantic provides director services to Griswold one day per week. The board also approved the business official sharing agreement with Riverside.
Updated: One Person Hurt in Two-Vehicle Crash in Atlantic
(Atlantic) One person was taken to the hospital following a two-vehicle accident on Monday morning in Atlantic. The Atlantic Police Department says the accident happened at 7:39 a.m. at 5th and Elm Streets. Cass EMS transported the driver of a Ford Explorer to Cass Health to treat minor injuries and unknown medical issues that may have caused the accident.
