Binghamton road closure to begin for Gateway project
State Street North in Binghamton will close for about three months beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 19 as work starts on the first phase of the Binghamton 363 Gateway Project . The shutdown affects the section between the northbound side of the State Street Bridge and Susquehanna Street, according to a community announcement. Crews are scheduled to remove an existing concrete median barrier, install underground drainage and utility crossings and place new pavement at state Route 434/State Street. The construction is expected to affect traffic entering and leaving downtown Binghamton. Route 434 eastbound traffic heading into the city by way of the State Street Bridge will be reduced from three lanes to one. Drivers will be directed to a signed detour beginning at the existing cloverleaf off-ramp. Southbound traffic leaving downtown Binghamton will continue to have access to the State Street Bridge, though only one lane will remain open. Motorists are being advised to follow posted detour signs, allow extra travel time and use caution while moving through the work zone. The traffic pattern changes are part of the opening phase of the Binghamton 363 Gateway Project, which includes roadway and infrastructure improvements in the area. More: Major downtown Binghamton
