Alachua County set to begin $4 million Northwest 83rd Street overhaul

Alachua County officials, Santa Fe College leaders and residents gathered Nov. 5 to celebrate the kickoff of the Northwest 83rd Street project. County Manager Michelle Lieberman, County Commissioner Anna Prizzia, Gainesville City Commissioner Ed Book and Santa Fe College President Paul Broadie II were among those who spoke during the sun-soaked program along the west side of the roadway. “I want to thank Alachua County for their commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike,” Broadie said in a county press release. According to the release, the county has budgeted $4 million for improvements along Northwest 83rd Street, a roadway that carries about 12,000 vehicle trips daily, as part of its 10-year, $250 million Transportation Capital Improvement Program. The project was originally planned for 2028. However, Alachua County Public Works Director Ramon Gavarrete said he requested in June that the project be moved up because of other ongoing and recently completed projects in the area. The county recently completed work on Fort Clarke Boulevard and Northwest 23rd Street, as well as around the I-75 interchange on Northwest 39th Avenue. Child knocked from bicycle near Oak View Middle School, driver cited

A driver was cited after striking a child's bicycle shortly before 7:30 a.m. Nov. 5 near Oak View Middle School in Newberry, according to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office. ACSO Public Information Officer Lisa Sacaccio said a field service technician had stopped traffic at the intersection of Southwest 250th Street and Southwest 15th Avenue to allow the student to cross the road when a driver went around the technician. Florida TODAY: Checkout charity, Florida election, coral reefs As the driver went around the technician, the vehicle struck a tire on the child's bicycle, causing the child to fall onto the road. The child suffered minor injuries, described as “just scrapes,” and was evaluated at the scene by deputies and responding emergency medical personnel. No road closures were necessary.
