1 dead, 2 in hospital after Highway 99 crash in Elk Grove involving big rig

One person died and two others were taken to hospitals Thursday after a crash involving a big rig that snarled traffic on Highway 99 in Elk Grove. The crash occurred on northbound Highway 99 near Eschinger Road around 1:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office said in a news release, with initial reports to dispatch indicating a tractor-trailer had crashed into two vehicles on the shoulder. A driver and passenger in one of the vehicles, a Nissan, and the driver of another, a Mazda, were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to critical, according to the CHP. The Nissan driver died at the hospital, CHP officials said. Preliminary investigation into the crash found that the Mazda had become disabled on the shoulder, the news release said. The driver of the Nissan – a relative of the Mazda driver – pulled in behind the Mazda to give assistance. The big rig traveling in the far right northbound lane of the highway drifted, for unknown reasons, into the right shoulder and hit both vehicles. Woman dies from flu in Sacramento County, first death of 2026-27 season

Public health officials on Wednesday announced a woman died from complications related to influenza, making it Sacramento County’s first flu-related death of the 2026-27 season. The woman who died was in her 50s with underlying chronic medical conditions who was not vaccinated against the flu, according to a news release from the Sacramento County Public Health. Officials said the woman developed respiratory symptoms in mid-October and was diagnosed with influenza A. She was hospitalized a few days later and died shortly after. “This is a stark reminder that the flu can cause serious illness and even death, but vaccination remains our best defense,” county Public Health Officer Dr. Phuong Luu said in the news release. “Everyone aged 6 months and older should get vaccinated for influenza now, especially with flu circulating very high in California currently.” Health officials said the county’s first flu-related death this season comes about a month earlier than last year, a death that was reported in late November 2025. They encouraged all residents to protect themselves by getting vaccinated this fall. Democrat declares win, Republican doesn't concede in Sacramento-area Assembly race

Democrat Amy Slavensky declared victory Friday evening in the competition for a Sacramento County Assembly seat over Republican incumbent Josh Hoover. Her lead grew to 53.1% of the vote for the 7th Assembly District after the county released updated results earlier in the day. They are separated by more than 7,000 ballots. “I’m ready to go to work for the people, no matter who they are, where they come from, or who they voted for, because that’s how I serve and that’s the job,” she said in a statement. But Hoover said he was not ready to concede. “I just think it’s way too early,” he said. “We want to let the elections officials do their job.” The district includes Citrus Heights, Folsom and Rancho Cordova and has 14,000 more Democrats than Republicans. Yet Hoover has held the seat since he upset a Democratic incumbent in 2022. The contest is one of several Democrats are hoping to flip so they can expand their supermajority in the Legislature. Sacramento restaurant closed over rodent droppings. What else did inspectors find?

Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to a Japanese fusion restaurant after finding about 20 rodent droppings throughout the facility. Additionally, 12 restaurants were cited for unattended raw chicken, gunk found on a can opener and a missing food safety certificate. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination . In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Passenger killed in Rio Linda crash with parked big rig; driver fled scene, CHP says

A passenger was killed early Friday when a car crashed into a parked big rig in Rio Linda and the driver fled the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported about 2:20 a.m. near West Elkhorn Boulevard and Marnice Road in Sacramento County, according to CHP traffic logs. The car rear-ended the parked big rig, killing the passenger, CHP Officer Justin Fetterly of the North Sacramento office confirmed. The driver fled the scene, Fetterly said.
