School lunch periods should be longer
How is lunch supposed to be a meal if it only lasts 20 minutes? In most schools, including Edison Intermediate School (EIS), students have only 20 minutes to find a seat in the lunchroom, wait in line to buy their food, eat, and still find time to talk with friends. Instead of having a relaxing break in the middle of the school day, students have to race against time to survive the rest of the day. In EIS, students have 40 minutes, split into 20 minutes for lunch and 20 minutes for recess outside. Consequently, EIS can enforce a 30-minute eating period and a ten-minute recess period because it helps students perform academically, prevents waste and insect problems, and allows them to eat healthier food options.

PILOT Funds and Schools: Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should
I would like to thank Mr. Sandahl for reminding us of the age old principle that just because one can, doesn’t mean one should. As he correctly points out in his recent Letter to the Editor (Setting the Record Straight on PILOTs), the state law does not require municipalities to allocate a single dime of PILOT funds to schools, thus shifting the burden of the largest component of property taxes to legacy property owners.
