Walmart holds grand reopening in Athens, donates thousands to charity
ATHENS, Ohio — The Walmart Supercenter on East State Street held a grand reopening ceremony Friday, which the store capped off by donating thousands of dollars to local charities. The ribbon-cutting honor was given to Tina Norman, who’s been employed at the store since it opened in 2002. Along with Walmart employees and management, local dignitaries, including Mayor Steve Patterson, Athens City Police Department Chief Nick Magruder and Athens County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Rodney Smith were in attendance. Robin and Jimmy Burrow, parents of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, and members of the board of directors of the Joe Burrow Foundation also joined the ceremony. The supermarket underwent major renovations, including a full interior makeover with updated bathrooms, a refreshed automotive section and new shelving layouts, among the many changes that have taken place. In contrast to the jovial atmosphere at Friday’s event, the initial reception toward Walmart when it opened its first store in Athens was somewhat ambivalent. We donate to Friends of Shelter Dogs and My Sister’s
