'Sword fight' erupts at Northern Michigan campsite after argument over 'subpar sushi': report

TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ) — A Traverse City man has been arrested after an argument over “subpar sushi” in Northern Michigan escalated to a “sword fight.”

The 20-year-old suspect was arrested Tuesday morning, hours after the incident happened, according to a report from UpNorthLive .

The incident happened around 9 p.m. Monday at The Pines, “an area near the Grand Traverse Commons where those experiencing homelessness camp,” according to the report.

Responding officers were told the victim, a 27-year-old man from Traverse City, had brought food to a campsite at the Pines to share.

The 20-year-old suspect was upset because he didn’t like the food, which was identified to police as “subpar sushi,” according to UpNorthLive.

The suspect allegedly began swinging a machete — or possibly a hatchet — at the victim, who was able to locate and pick up a shovel to defend himself.

The two men then engaged in a “sword fight,” according to the report.

At some point during the melee, “an unknown person picked up feces and threw it at the victim,” police officials said.

Authorities searched for the suspect Monday night, but were unable to find him. He was eventually found and arrested Tuesday morning for felonious assault. Officials did not immediately release the suspect’s name.

No weapons were found in the suspect’s tent, but three hatchets and two shovels were found in the nearby tent of an “acquaintance of the suspect,” who allowed officers to search it, according to the report. Officials said those were taken in for evidence.
