BG Planning Commission sides with neighbors and recommends house remains single-family zoning
Nine residents of Bowling Green last week defended the single-family zoning in their neighborhood of North Main Street and Curtis Avenue. The neighbors asked that the city’s Planning Commission not support the request that a home built around 1900 be rezoned R-2, which would allow for a duplex. With a vote of 7-2, the commission agreed with the neighbors and will recommend to City Council that the property remain zoned Pedestrian-Residential.

Toledo eyes landmark designations for more than 100 buildings
Toledo City Council plans to work its way through a list of nearly 150 buildings and designate them as local landmarks — a status that would prevent exterior changes without approval. For some buildings, the landmark recognition gives new status to Toledo icons. Among the buildings are Tony Packo’s original location in East Toledo, the Overland smokestack, and the clubhouses of Inverness and Toledo country clubs. There are also a few oddities in the stack of buildings that council will consider designating as landmarks. Several of the buildings are not in Toledo: the Wildwood Manor House is in Sylvania Township and Hope Lutheran Church is in Ottawa Hills. Another property near Monroe Street was demolished sometime before 2023. The majority of the list, about 80 properties, are religious buildings belonging to all denominations. There are fire and police stations, many Toledo Public Schools buildings, at least six libraries, a pump house, warehouses, office buildings, and hospitals. Not all property owners are excited about the recognition. Council can declare any property a local landmark without permission from owners, effectively preventing exterior changes, repairs, renovations, or demolition without prior approval. Perrysburg jail-turned-home offers glimpse inside as it changes hands
Perrysburg’s original jail — complete with steel cells and stone walls — offers a rare glimpse of what it is like to call a 19th century lockup home. Step inside the 1847 building at 240 W. Indiana Ave., now on the market, and it quickly becomes clear that it is less a spooky relic than a beloved family residence. Thoughtful updates reveal a warm, lived-in home, while the original cells still preserve a somber sense of confinement. “We call this the bullpen area. It has six jail cells,” Caroline Hoffmann said, gesturing down a ground-floor corridor where an 8-by-30-foot space is lined with six startlingly tight 5-by-6-foot cells, each with an 8-foot ceiling. The space is so narrow that average adults can stretch out their arms and touch both walls. “Tight is an understatement,” said Richard Baranowski, local history librarian at Way Public Library. “Confinement was real punishment.” The structure was built when Perrysburg was the county seat and was used as the Wood County jail and infirmary until 1870. It continued to serve as the Perrysburg jail until 1899, then was sold by the town in 1918. The former Wood County jail has remained in the same extended family
