Longtime metro Detroit restaurants close as owners cite rising costs

Across metro Detroit, longtime restaurants plus a bakery are among the businesses that closed in October. Several of the closing announcements brought diners and customers out in droves for one last taste, slice or sip. On the October list of closings is the last location of the Sign of the Beefcarver in Royal Oak, Capri Italian Bakery in Dearborn and Perry’s Pizza in Clawson – all in business for decades. And like other recent closings, owners cited the economy and high food costs as the reason for closing. Here’s a roundup of metro Detroit's late September and October closings. Atwater in the Park Grosse Pointe Park This Grosse Pointe Park brewery, with a taproom and biergarten in a former church, poured its last pints on Oct. 23. After more than a decade in business, Atwater in the Park ended its run with a farewell party. No reason for the closure was given. Camelia’s Mexican Grill Royal Oak In Royal Oak on 11 Mile Road, the neighborhood spot is permanently closed, per its Google listing. No information was given on its Facebook page or website. A Camelia’s Mexican Grill location in Farmington Hills closed in early 2025. Capri Italian Bakery Dearborn

Stinson: What Happened to the Company Built by a Pilot Who Logged Over 16,000 Flight Hours

In 1920, aviator Edward Stinson, also the brother of aviator Katherine Stinson, founded the Stinson Aircraft Company in Dayton, Ohio. After five years, Stinson moved his focus to Detroit, Michigan, for his future aviation projects. At the same time, he worked as a stunt pilot and earned $100,000 a year, which was a large amount at the time. He discovered that Detroit’s business community was open to his idea of developing his own airplane. Supported by Alfred V. Verville and local businessmen, members of the Aviation Committee of the Detroit Board of Commerce, Stinson set up the Stinson Aircraft Syndicate in 1925. The committee provided $25,000 to design and build a prototype. This prototype was a biplane with an enclosed cockpit that could carry four passengers and was powered by a Whirlwind J-4 air-cooled radial engine. The test flights took place at Packard Field in Roseville, Michigan, a suburb northeast of Detroit. The Stinson Detroiter SB-1 first flew from Packard Field on January 25, 1926. The airplane was unusual for the time, with an enclosed cabin. It was also equipped with heat, upholstered seats, and an electric cigar lighter, making it comfortable for passengers during cold Michigan winters. The plane became popular, and in February, Stinson offered flights to 70 riders.

Ann Arbor Server Sues Anna's House, Says Overtime Pay Fell to $5.90 an Hour

Lauren Burke has now sued the breakfast chain, its owner and 14 related companies, arguing that math reflects a systemic shortchanging of tipped workers rather than a one-time error.

Wayne Co. exec Warren Evans calls out 'bad' data center deals

FERNDALE — Wayne County Executive Warren Evans said he isn't inherently against data centers. But he is against bad deals, and the owners of proposed data centers in Michigan have not given communities enough money to make up for the negatives of them, Evans said at a Detroit Regional Chamber event Oct. 30 in Ferndale. The event was a rare joint meeting of Evans with Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, who spoke about a range of issues, including the need to not operate as "silos." They said southeast Michigan needs to attract and retain a talented workforce to boost economic growth. WDIV reporter Jason Colthorp moderated the event, but took questions from the audience at the end. Several questions were about data centers. Evans was reluctant to speak on the data centers, going last after Coulter and Hackel had their say. When Colthorp asked him if he wanted to answer the question, Evans said "no not really," drawing laughter from the crowd. "I'm not internally against data centers. I’m against bad deals," Evans said. "Some of the richest companies in the world are going to make billions of dollars — billions — on a
