New study to measure Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary's economic impact on northeast Michigan

ALPENA, Mich. — A new research initiative will examine how Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary drives economic activity across northeast Michigan communities this summer. The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and West Virginia University are partnering to conduct the comprehensive study, which will measure the sanctuary's impact on recreation and tourism throughout the region. Researchers plan to survey both residents and visitors at various locations from Rogers City to Harrisville. The study team will gather data at parks, marinas, museums and beaches to understand visitor motivations and spending patterns. Researchers want to determine why people visit the sanctuary, which cultural and recreational resources they value most, and how their spending supports the regional economy. The collaborative effort aims to provide Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary with concrete data about its economic contribution to northeast Michigan. This information will help sanctuary officials better understand water-related recreation and heritage tourism trends in the area. Study results will enable Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary to tailor its programming and marketing efforts to better serve coastal communities. The data will also provide local government officials and organizations with evidence to support future economic development initiatives. The research findings will be made available to the public
