Whitesboro (NY) miracle touchdown voted USA TODAY Sports Play of the Week
The final week of October brought all sorts of tricks and treats when it came to the high school football scene on a national scale but more than anything, the day before Halloween saw arguably the craziest play of the year. In the closing seconds of the Empire State's Section III Class A quarterfinals, Whitesboro (NY) faced a massive uphill climb, trailing Carthage (NY) 30-25 with four seconds remaining. Needing a miracle, they got it. Whitesboro quarterback Frank Zupancic fired a shot down the field to Connor McDonald who was hit in mid-air. The ball popped up and found the arms Landon Pearsall before it hit the ground. Pearsall's momentum was stopped short and tossed the ball back to McDonald who had gotten up from the initial hit. McDonald received the pitch and bolted to the end zone, securing the unbelievable win for the the Warriors. The play earned this week's USA TODAY Sports Play of the Week after a poll of the USA TODAY Sports audience. Want your play to be considered for USA TODAY Sports Play of the Week? Here's how! Binghamton University students turn EMT frustration into a new company
EMS personnel across the country may soon have significantly more time to respond to critical emergencies thanks to new technology pioneered by two Binghamton University students. While the COVID-19 pandemic was spent sheltering indoors away from others, it helped spur a passion in emergency services for Binghamton University seniors Joshua Ackerman and Yoav Reshef. Now years removed from the high school days that marked the start of their foray into becoming EMTs, the two are working to make life easier for emergency service workers. Thanks to technology developed by the students’ company, Lucent EMS Solutions, EMTs could save precious time formerly spent filing paperwork, allowing for more efficient processes and ultimately, more time helping those in need. In October, Lucent won second place at Empire State Development and FuzeHub's invention competition, winning $110,000. Binghamton University students develop time-saving technology for EMTs Originally started in February 2026, Lucent has had an objectively successful year, as far as new companies go. Before taking home second place in the invention competition, Lucent won the grand prize at the NY Business Plan Competition in April — resulting in a critical $25,000 check that has helped the company grow in the following months.
