A lowly curb: More than you want to know

On bike rides along Water Avenue in Albany, I pass something slightly unusual these days: A new-looking curb that is smashed in several places. I don’t even remember being aware of when that curb between the street and the railroad track appeared. Who cares about or notices something as mundane as a curb?

North Fork Road reopens after repairs for landslide damage

North Fork Road has reopened after an extended closure to repair damage from a landslide, Marion County Public Works said on Nov. 4. The road, which branches off Highway 22 near Lyons and Mehama, had been closed since April 20. "The curves and grades have changed, and workers may still be on site doing final cleanup, so please drive carefully!" the county said in a brief statement announcing the reopening. The reopening happens at an interesting time. The U.S. Forest Service just announced the reopening of the Little North Santiam Trail for the first time since 2020, and North Fork Road is the quickest access route. However, Marion County also just closed three of its parks for the season on Nov. 1 — North Fork, Salmon Falls and Bear Creek. Those parks are most popular for swimming during the summer. This year, with the closure, visitors had to reach them via Gates Hill Road. The construction took place where an old landslide had damaged the road, at milepost 5. About 1,350 feet of the road was reconstructed with a 22-foot-wide paved surface. The project also included drainage, guardrail and stormwater treatment, according to earlier reporting. North Fork Road will likely

Jake: Seattle-to-Portland bullet train is a hilariously horrible idea

I’ve ridden high-speed rail all over Europe. It was a novelty, and it was convenient. But America is not Europe, which is why a Seattle-to-Portland bullet train is an awful idea. There are plenty of reasons, but let’s zero in on the most obvious one: cost. The best...

Want a bullet train from Seattle to Portland? Here's your chance to weigh in

A bullet train whisking passengers from Seattle to Portland or Vancouver, B.C., in about an hour may be a distant dream, but Washington transportation officials want your help shaping it. Why it matters: The proposed high-speed rail system could transform travel along the increasingly congested Interstate 5 corridor, offering an alternative to driving or flying between the Pacific Northwest's largest metro areas. The Cascadia region is projected to add 3.4 million residents by 2050, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation, putting more pressure on its transportation network. Driving the news: WSDOT wants the public's input on its Cascadia High-Speed Rail proposal by Nov. 13. The survey asks about transportation needs and priorities as the agency studies potential routes, train speeds, stops and connections to existing transit. It also seeks feedback on the separate I-5 Master Plan , which examines future highway improvements. What they're saying: "We want to know who's going to use it and how," WSDOT spokesperson Steve Peer told Axios. "It's very important to get public input because it really guides us on moving forward." How it works: The proposed trains would travel at 200 mph or more on new, dedicated tracks, with fewer stops than

Interstate Bridge Replacement as a Tunnel: Totally Doable

This is an alternative to the Columbia River Crossing / Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) Project based on an immersed tube tunnel (ITT). The IBR proponents have been against using an ITT, and I will address their concerns at the end. The principal advantages of a tunnel are that it frees up land, leaves nothing in the water that impedes river traffic, and leaves nothing in the air that impedes air traffic. (For those not familiar, one reason that the IBR is a hot mess is that it needs to be high enough to allow for barge traffic but low enough to not intrude into approach routes to the airport. It is still high enough off the ground at either side of the river to demand huge disruptive interchanges on the waterfront.)
