But for Boomers born between 1946 and 1964 who are no longer in the workforce, the hustle and bustle of daily life in the big city may no longer be serving them. For those looking for a more laid-back lifestyle, Florida's Panama City, located in the Panhandle, could be worth considering. Panama City's proximity to Gulf Coast beaches offers opportunities for frequent beach trips, and recent migration data suggests that the surrounding area is attracting some Atlanta baby boomers.

Pensacola faces cuts, tax increases to offset Amendment 3 passage

All options — including service cuts and tax increases — are on the table as Pensacola officials begin the grapple with a $9 million budget hole created by the passage of Amendment 3 . Pensacola City Administrator David Stafford told reporters on Nov. 4 that city officials will be meeting this week to begin discussion on what options the city should explore after 62% of Florida voters approved Amendment 3. "Everything's on the table," Stafford said. "Nothing's been ruled in. Nothing's been ruled out." The amendment to Florida's state constitution mandates that homestead property tax exemptions increase to $250,000 by 2028 for homeowners who have lived in Florida for at least five years. The amendment means that 72% of Pensacola homes will pay nothing in property taxes to the city or county, though they will still pay property taxes for schools. Once the amendment is fully in place, the city will face an estimated $9 million budget hole, with $7.2 million coming out of its general fund and $1.2 million from the city's Community Redevelopment Agency. "We'll have to have those serious conversations internally as a staff, with City Council, with other local governments, and of course with residents on

FPL's Southport facility works like a giant rechargeable battery

An FPL battery energy storage system in Southport began operating Oct. 31. According to company officials, the 400-megawatt, 1,600-megawatt-hour system, the largest battery storage facility in FPL's fleet by energy capacity, can supply enough electricity to serve up to 300,000 homes for four hours. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that as of July 1, 2025, Bay County had approximately 115,291 housing units. Located at 4300 County Road 2300, the 26-acre battery energy storage facility occupies the former coal storage site of the Lansing Smith Electric Generating Plant. The facility contains 358 Samsung battery containers and 120 GE inverter-transformer units, said Geoff West, senior director of development for Florida Power & Light, during a site tour. How it works The battery energy storage system stores electricity generated by nearby FPL solar facilities. When that energy is needed, inverters convert it from direct current, or DC, to alternating current, or AC, which is the type of electricity used in homes and businesses. Substation transformers then increase the voltage before the electricity is sent to the power grid. In simple terms, the system works like a giant rechargeable battery, storing excess solar energy during the day and releasing it when demand for electricity
