Guest Opinion: “No” to Purchase of Madrone Ridge Property
Apparently the Ashland City Council will be voting on whether or not to acquire the Madrone Ridge property. I urge a no vote. First, in an age when the city is not able to create a balanced budget, spending millions of dollars on a nearly 2000 acre property is crazy. Second, as usual, the city has not considered the cost of maintaining the property. What will it cost to reduce fire risk, to put in an infrastructure and to maintain the infrastructure? Per usual, the City has not considered any of these certain future costs. Third, recall that the City couldn’t even pay for its share of the East Main Street Park, which is only 6 acres. How will it pay to develop and maintain 2000 acres?

Somewhere in southern Oregon, there’s a town that greets you with a giant blue sign that simply says, “It’s the Climate,” and honestly, that’s the most confident civic branding move since someone decided to put “What Happens Here, Stays Here” on a billboard in the desert.
