Court order puts Glenville back in Ohio football playoffs, but another twist follows

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced that Glenville's (OH) football team had been removed from postseason eligibility this year on Thursday, Oct. 29. Two days later, that decision was overturned, for the moment, by a court order. The OHSAA released a statement late Friday night saying that a court order had been granted, giving the program a temporary restraining order and allowing them to play despite the original decision from the association. ”Following the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s removal of Cleveland Glenville from the football playoffs on Thursday (Oct. 29), the OHSAA is aware of the court order issued today (Friday, Oct. 30) requiring the playing of the football playoff game between Glenville and University School,” the statement reads. “The OHSAA stands by its ruling issued on Thursday (Oct. 29). However, the OHSAA will comply with the court order and is working with the two schools to reschedule the game sometime this weekend. ...A hearing is scheduled for Monday. Adventure, reading and recognition mark a busy season for Chippewa students

Chippewa students have been taking learning beyond the classroom with outdoor adventures, hands-on lessons and a community literacy event. The recent activities included lessons on animal migration, a fifth-grade trip to Camp Y-Noah and Reading Under the Lights, according to a community announcement. The district also recently inducted 18 juniors and seniors into the National Honor Society. Second graders at Chippewa Elementary learned about migration by stepping into the role of migrating wood ducks. Kelly Reily of the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District helped students follow a migration route from the ducks' nesting grounds in Ohio to Florida. Fifth graders took their learning outdoors at Camp Y-Noah. Students tried canoeing, climbing and archery, hiked trails and participated in team-building activities. Reading Under the Lights Chippewa's annual Reading Under the Lights literacy event brought elementary students and staff together with Chippewa High School athletes and community members. Pete the Cat also joined the event, which featured games and reading activities. The district also recognized its newest National Honor Society members. Ohio high school football powerhouse banned from playoffs amid probe

An investigation into a player's eligibility has removed Glenville, one of Ohio's premier high school football programs, from postseason play. The Akron Beacon Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported that the Cleveland-area program's postseason ban stems from an audit of fall-sport participation that found many of the team's football players should be playing for other schools. This is not the first time that Glenville has received this punishment for the same situation. The other time was in 2018, when the program was also fined $5,000 and placed on probation for three years. According to the report, Ginn Academy, a non-OHSAA-member magnet school, is at the center of the investigation. The school does not offer sports, and athletes there can participate at other schools as long as they are in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and live closest to that school. The report noted that the OHSAA is reviewing the extent of the violations and whether they extend to other schools in the area.
